"Windswept I" 2025
Oil paint and mixed media on cradled wood panel
The artist signed the back of the painting.
“Windswept I” is a serene abstract with a composition of softly layered horizontal bands of color that evoke sky, land, and distant horizon. Subtle transitions of pale green, warm peach, muted cream, and atmospheric blue dissolve into one another, creating a sense of quiet motion and expansive space. Holt’s warm, earth-toned palette and delicate brushwork lend the painting a meditative quality, recalling the feeling of wind passing across an open landscape or light shifting across water and sky. The composition is intentionally minimal yet deeply nuanced, inviting prolonged viewing and personal interpretation. Each layer feels suspended, as if held in balance, allowing the work to function equally as an abstract field and a distilled natural vista.
Executed with a refined, contemporary sensibility, “Windswept I” exemplifies Holt’s exploration of calm, spatial depth, and tonal harmony. The painting exudes a timeless presence, well-suited for modern, coastal, or minimalist interiors, appealing to collectors drawn to atmospheric abstraction and quietly expressive works.
About the Artist:
Katheryn Holt paints memory. Her abstract paintings are infused with half-remembered landscapes. She has been documenting her interior and exterior life through painting since she was 4 years old. Growing up on Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles, in the 1950s and 1960s, her frame of visual references was formed both by horizon lines extending across a seemingly endless Pacific Ocean and the cultural influences of post-World War 2 America. Holt studied painting at the University of Southern California and graduated with a B.F.A. from the Art Center College of Design.
She taught at New York’s School of Visual Arts, has won awards from the Society of Illustrators, and was included in American Illustrator and Outstanding American Illustrators. She has exhibited in many solo and group shows, including eight shows at Tria Gallery, New York; national juried competitions, including the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, the Santa Cruz Art League, and the Bolinas Museum; and was featured in a recent display in the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in San Francisco. She won first place at the American Pastel Society and is part of the permanent Kunst Museum, Hollfeld, Germany collection. Her work has been shown in New York, Germany, Texas, Georgia, Colorado, and California.
