Louise Janin (1893–1997) was an American-born painter who spent the majority of her life in Paris, where she developed a deeply spiritual, symbolist-inflected visual language. Born in Durham, New Hampshire, she trained at the California School of Fine Arts before traveling extensively in Asia, drawing inspiration from Buddhist, Hindu, and Taoist mythologies. In Paris from 1923 onward, she exhibited in salons such as the Salon des Orientalistes and became associated with the Musicalists under Henry Valensi.
After World War II, Janin pioneered a technique of “cosmogrammes” — mixed-media marbled works on paper that evoke cosmic, sacred, and mystical visions. Her work consistently wove together figuration, abstraction, and spirituality, making her a singular voice in 20th-century modern art.
