About the Item

After Doubles (1990) is a compelling oil on canvas by Mark Lancaster (British, 1938–2021), measuring 19⅞ x 23¾ inches (50.7 x 60.3 cm). The work demonstrates Lancaster’s sophisticated interplay of geometry, colour, and abstraction, combining precise compositional structure with a subtle, painterly sensibility. After Doubles reflects his enduring interest in spatial rhythm, formal repetition, and the dialogue between minimalism and expression, creating a balanced, contemplative visual experience. Artist Biography: Mark Lancaster (British, 1938–2021) was a celebrated painter, stage designer, and colourist whose work bridged fine art and performance. Trained at King’s College, Cambridge, Lancaster became a key figure in the British art scene from the 1960s onward, working in both London and New York. His collaborations included time with Andy Warhol, as well as serving as Resident Lighting Designer for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, where he integrated colour, movement, and light into innovative performance environments. Lancaster’s paintings are known for their refined chromatic harmonies, geometric clarity, and meditative stillness. His work is held in major collections such as the Tate, the British Council, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. After Doubles exemplifies his mastery of abstract form and compositional precision.
