Good Time is a new acrylic drip painting by Houston artist Marthann Masterson completed in April 2025 in her Houston studio. It is a very tedious process to produce the drip paintings. Signed on back so can be hung in any direction. Look for FREE Shipping at Checkout
Masterson, a contemporary artist, is best known for her vivid drip paintings. The large, vibrant paintings are technical and richly layered - each with between 60 to 100 layers of paint each. Taking about two to three weeks to complete, Masterson’s drip paintings are commissioned by private patrons as well as local hotels and restaurants. Because each layer of paint takes about 30 minutes to dry, Masterson works on between two to five acrylic paintings at a time in her large Sawyer Yards studio in Houston, Texas in the Inner Loop area.
Well-versed in technical painting and realism, Masterson began painting abstracts relatively recently. “Drip paintings are very technical, but abstract paintings come from the inside,” says the artist. “I thought abstract art would be easy, but it has taken me about two years to have one that I think is presentable. I don’t enjoy making the same type of art all the time; as an artist, I like to be able to create different types.”
A frequenter of museums and art galleries, Masterson finds inspiration looking at art and taking in both the technical and emotional aspects of other artist’s work. She also credits working in a community of over 300 artists with providing constant inspiration and feedback. “It is such a privilege to come into a beautiful, light space with wonderful colors, so it is hard not to be inspired. Art is a wonderful way to spend a day, and it is definitely my passion.”
"As an artist I employ visual language to address my feelings with the goal of awakening interest and inspiring my audience. Layer by layer I manipulate a plethora of colors and materials to create immediate visual harmony and awakening a set of emotions, contained in the conscious and subconscious that takes the viewer to a special moment in time and space. It takes days and days to produce one of the drip paintings. The result is layers and layers of paint on top and on side of each other. Marthann Masterson’s work chronicles her life story, a journey of transcendence. Her path in life has often been guided by seemingly divergent “happy accidents.” Influenced by Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock, Masterson's paintings evoke a rich visual harmony derived from the juxtaposition of precision and randomness.
"It's always a journey of color," Masterson said. "And I always break the rules." [Houston Arts Alliance]
She continues to explore new ideas and techniques on her canvases – and isn’t afraid to follow the journey of a happy accident in the studio to the creation of a whole new series of work.
My paintings are often noted by the precision and elegance that defines the true essence, a passionate artist."
They say that if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life – and Marthann Masterson is fortunate in that sense. The native Houstonian is currently on her third career, this time as an artist, but still talks fondly of her first two careers when she worked as a chef and television personality. During her time as a chef and caterer, she cooked for royalty from around the world, diplomats, and headliners like Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones. After her television show, which aired primarily in the Midwest and east coast markets, ended, she moved back to Houston and became interested in art. “I was on a mission to learn about art,” says Masterson. “I took lessons with my husband in my kitchen, and my teacher told me that I should go to art school because I had talent - that was twenty years ago.”

BIOGRAPHY
Marthann Masterson uses her paintings to chronicle her life story, her exploration and transcendence–whether she is creating a representational piece or an abstract dialogue of light, color and space. The artist says her path has been guided by fate. Her creative expression first came in the form of culinary arts. She built a successful career in catering to dignitaries, royalty and even rock stars. But it was when she was asked to run the cafe in the Museum of Fine Arts Houston that her attention was drawn to fine art. Marthann Masterson received formal instruction in painting at the Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Later she was mentored by artist Alfredo Scaroina who introduced abstract techniques to her. In addition she has attended many workshops including studying under Audrey Phillips and twice painting in a workshop in San Miguel de Allende. She also attended the University of Houston, where she studied marketing and public relations. Today, Masterson, a third generation Houstonian, can be found in her studio at the Silos in Sawyer Yards where she has painted for many years. She counts Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock as her influences–and strives to obtain a visual harmony similar to theirs–derived from the juxtaposition of precision and randomness. Both artists have inspired her to explore vibrancy and freedom in her work. Masterson’s paintings have been recognized for their passion, precision and elegance. Recent exhibitions include a group, juried show at the Woman’s New York Caucus of the Art and solo exhibits with Octavia Art Gallery and the Winter Street Studio Gallery, both in Houston. Her piece, “On the Outside” inspired a ballet by the Sarasota Ballet in Florida. The painting won an international competition sponsored through the nonprofit organization Embracing Our Differences and was seen by over 40,000 people. Masterson explains that, for her, art is a visual language, meant to awaken interest and inspire an audience. She uses art to share her emotions, sometimes hidden deeply beneath the surface, and hopes others will find inspiration in her work.

Both Sides of the Gerund Abstract/Canvas Spray Paint Contemporary 40" x 40"
Located in Houston, TX
Both Sides of the Gerund by Erick Sandlin is an Abstract/Canvas Spray Paint work of art that is 40" x 40" . THere is no need for a frame because the painting is finished on the sides aka gallery wrapped.
What's a gerund? A gerund is the noun form of a verb that ends in -ing. For example, playing, dancing, eating. Right away this is confusing for students, as they are used to seeing that form as the continuous/progressive form of the verb (“she is eating”, “they were dancing”).
