The work is the result of a distinctive technique where the artist paints square by square, line by line, subtly shifting tones to create a seamless gradient of color. This meticulous process generates a striking illusion of light, and can take several weeks—or even months—to complete. Although thoroughly considered, the creative process always leaves space for spontaneous discoveries.
In this piece, Piffeteau avoids using red, opting instead for shades of ochre, brown, and white. This limited palette enhances the painting’s unique “luminous blur” effect—an optical illusion that gives the impression of an internal light source, as if the artwork were softly lit from within.
Through the interplay of simple geometric forms and finely tuned color transitions, Piffeteau’s abstract paintings create vibrant, immersive experiences. Viewers are drawn into a personal, contemplative encounter—one that is both sensorial and deeply subjective.

Mathieu Piffeteau was born in Nantes in 1982 to a surrealist painter mother and a topographer father. Certain family visits to museums had a profound effect on the young artist: he marvelled at the imaginative power of Salvador Dalí at the theatre-museum in Figueras and was amazed by the incredible optical illusions of Victor Vasarely at the eponymous Foundation in Aix-en-Provence. At the same time, he admired the perfection of his father’s drawings at home, developing his own taste for precision and geometry. The shapes on which his canvases are based are now created with the compasses and rulers of his topographer father. Mathieu Piffeteau has been a self-taught painter since the age of 20. However, his work at the time had nothing in common with today’s: figurative, rapid and instinctive, it was an outlet for his feelings about injustice and violence in society. After completing a master’s degree in sociology, he moved to Australia to live in the Aboriginal community of Wugularr (Beswick). There, he took part in the production of works that were halfway between art and craft, and he was marked by this extremely repetitive and time-consuming traditional painting, subject to strict codes. Back in France, he moved to Biarritz to pursue his passion for surfing and worked in the construction industry as a rope access technician. Following an accident at work in 2018, he decided to devote himself to painting and joined a collective studio. A feeling of powerlessness and frustration in the face of the problems of our world led him to abandon figurative representation. Mathieu Piffeteau became interested in light and optical effects, subjects on which he would later focus his artistic research. Motivated by a strong desire to exhibit his contemporary paintings in a public place, he prepared a very ambitious personal project to show his works in the Sainte-Eugénie crypt in Biarritz. Four years later, in 2023, he inaugurated his first solo exhibition with 53 canvases of various sizes created especially for the spaces of this fascinating venue. Between gallery exhibitions and increasingly immersive installation projects, the contemporary painter continues to question the role of the artist, his relationship with the observer, and the impact of our culture and society on contemporary art. “It’s not about intellectual representation, but a sensitive approach. My intention is to create a sensation by mixing shapes and colours.”

Ellen De Meutter (1981) teaches painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp. In 2006-2007 she followed the HISK programme in Ghent, in 2013-2014 she did a residency at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht.
De Meutter is represented by Tim Van Laere Gallery since 2006. (they represent Tal R, Marcel Dzama, Tomasz Kowalski and Franz West) Her work has been shown in various exhibitions in Belgium, the United States, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and Japan. In 2010 she had her first solo museum exhibition in Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens.
Ellen De Meutter alters her viewer's reality by presenting a language in which she classifies the figures, shapes and colors from her personal world into a captivating utopia. Contrary to current trends in Flemish art, De Meutter is not simply relaying an anecdote; she composes unique imagery that allows her to experiment with the placement of the subject and unique treatments of her medium. De Meutter's repertoire of vivid, semi-neon colors contrast the muted grays blacks and grays on which they lay. These seemingly energetic colors are at once enhanced by the dark undertones of the canvas below, while simultaneously insinuating a concealed gravity of subject. Belgian art critic and curator, Luk Lambrecht remarks on De Meutter's painting: "she folds back 'her' world onto itself, into a solid mass of color from which, very slowly, vague contours emerge, which safeguard our expectations about looking at an image." De Meutter's scenes are reminiscent of schoolyard games, incorporating a series of text and symbols. By combing figurative imagery with basic abstraction, Ellen De Meutter creates wildly successful compositions that allude to her comprehensive understanding of contemporary painting. She was included in the show, Tomorrow is a long time: Ellen De Meutter, Gelitin, Kati Heck, Anton Henning, Friedrich Kunath, Jonathan Meese, Peter Rogiers, Ed Templeton, Rinus Van de Velde, Aaron van Erp, Henk Visch, Franz West.
