Artist's Commentary:
"Like humans, each of these 400 squares, while all being squares, is unique. Each, hand painted and layered with a brush—using the ancient technique of encaustic, painting with beeswax. The layering affects and results in the overall and final square, telling and reflecting its own unique story. Together, the squares tell a story of all the squares combined, as a whole, without taking away from the individual value of each. I could look at this piece over 400 times and each time see and feel a new story... This piece is an acknowledgement of how powerfully we can actively create our own experience and how form affects and informs our space."
About the artist:
American Michele Renée Ledoux is best known for using fire + wax to create primarily black and white, contemporary abstract paintings using the ancient technique of encaustic, most known for its vibrant colors. The work has a heavy sculptural aspect, features uneven surfaces, cuts, cracks and chips; and often incorporates recycled material. The work is neutral in palette, architectural in style and organic in process and texture. Ledoux’s work is held in numerous private collections and has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally, garnering multiple “Best of Show” awards. Selected Exhibitions include: - Smithsonian Craft, Washington, D.C. - SOFA Chicago - Architectural Digest, NYC - Philadelphia Museum of Art
