About the Item

“Phenomena Rights of King", 1976. Gouache on Paper Framed: 43 ½ x 35 ½ inches Signed bottom center The Phenomena series is a celebrated body of abstract expressionist paintings and other works by the American artist Paul Jenkins (1923–2012). Jenkins titled many of his works with "Phenomena" to suggest the discovery of forms and instances created during the artistic process, embracing chance and the fluid nature of paint. Paul Jenkins was a pioneer in the "pour" painting technique, often referred to as an "Abstract Phenomenist".

His method involved pouring paint (oil and enamel, acrylic or gouache) directly onto the canvas, rather than using traditional brushes. He would then manipulate the flow of the paint by tilting the surface or using non-traditional tools like an ivory knife to control the direction and spread of his diaphanous washes. These washes would merge or layer pigments to create vibrant, translucent, and opaque effects that often resemble natural phenomena like clouds, water, or geological formations. The process was highly physical and meditative for Jenkins, who described it as a "big gamble," relying on past experience and intuition to balance chance and control.  The works are known for their bold colors and fluid, flowing compositions that suggest perpetual motion. Each work titled "Phenomena" is followed by a descriptive phrase (e.g., Phenomena Cross Wind Alternate, Phenomena Ever Cross Over, Phenomena Tidal Movement) that adds an allusive, poetic quality to the abstract images. Jenkins's work is included in the permanent collections of major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Tate Gallery in London. A film showcasing his unique technique, The Ivory Knife: Paul Jenkins at Work, received a Golden Eagle Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1966.

Blue Gaze Acrylic Painting, Abstract Expressionist, Signed, 66x66 in
By Robert Natkin
Located in New York, NY
Blue Gaze, 1977, by Robert Natkin (1930-2010) Acrylic on canvas 66 x 66 inches framed 25.98 x 25.98 cm) Signed on bottom right In childhood, Natkin recalls a dream where he dives into an Oriental rug and as he floats down into the rug he passes through bejeweled mazes of color that appear exotic to him. This recurring dream is not surprising to anyone familiar with this artist's work, since much of Natkin's work reminds one of textiles. He achieves this look by his use of cross-hatching, blottings, dottings and his own technique of transferring textures right onto the canvas by pressing with a heavy cloth or paper towel. Exhibitions: In 1957, Momentum, Chicago, IL In 1968, Pointdexter Gallery, New York, NY (solo) In 1969, San Francisco Museum of Art (retrospective 1952-1969), San Francisco, CA (solo) In 1974, Within the Decade: Selections from the Guggenheim Museum Permanent Collection, The Solomon R. After his discharge from military service at the end of February 1946, he briefly studied playwriting with dramatist George McCalmon at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Thereafter, Jenkins spent four years studying with Japanese American artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi in New York City. His first solo exhibitions were held at Studio Paul Facchetti in Paris in 1954 and the Martha Graham Gallery in New York City in 1956. Over the past thirty years, numerous retrospectives have been curated across the globe and Jenkins’ work can found in national collections from Europe and the United States to Israel, Australia and Japan. The diversity of his work springs from Jenkins’ wealth of eclectic influences. Some of his earliest works included what he called "interior landscapes" influenced by ancient natural forms like the caves he visited in the Ozark Mountains in his native-Missouri. Frequent student visits to the Frick Collection in New York fostered a love of the great masters: Bellini, Holbein, Vermeer, Rembrandt, de la Tour, Turner and Goya. In compliment, lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco...
