In this abstract expressionist painting by Shant, the tension between black and white creates an immediate, palpable sense of unease, which could recall the chaos and turmoil often associated with Lebanon's complex history. Indeed, Shank was born in Lebanon in Beirut in '71. From 1975 to 1992, Lebanon was the scene of a multifaceted war. Very deadly for the civilian population, it involved various protagonists, and a civil war broke out in 1975-1976, then again in 1983-1985. Whether consciously or unconsciously distancing from these events, having been exposed to them directly or through the tragic experiences of families who remained in the country, the bold brushstrokes and swirling circular shapes evoke a sense of urgency, reflecting the inner turmoil and external conflicts that may have shaped the artist's experience.
Abstract expressionism is a free universe where everyone can interpret a painting according to its history, its current events, whatever the resonance may be between the personal history of the spectator and that of the artist.
The chaotic composition of this piece invites us to explore our inner worlds as we navigate through the painting's complex layers of meaning. Shant fills space with dynamic energy, creating an organization of forms, a dialogue that challenges traditional notions of order and structure.
It is impossible to separate Shant's artistic expression from the socio-political context of Lebanon. The artist's education undoubtedly influences his point of view, infusing the work with a questioning that resonates on a profoundly universal level.
Ultimately, Shant's abstract expressionism in this painting transcends mere representation, inviting viewers to confront the complexities of the human condition and the lasting impact of conflict on the individual and collective psyche.
He was born in 1971 in Beirut, Lebanon, where Shant Beudjekian’s art practice was discovered at 14, after gaining recognition from the Swiss national youth soccer team and winning many trophies and medals then.
In 1995, after moving to California, San Diego, he completed a 4 year Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts with a minor in Ceramics at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
He also attended a one-year internship in landscape architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design. He returned to Southern California in 2004, where he practiced as a full-time Artist in the Local Art Communities of Southern California.
He has been painting for 25 years while receiving appreciative acceptances from curators and Gallery Directors from the East Coast. He exhibited in several cities on the East Coast of the United States, along with exhibitions in the Chelsea District of Manhattan, New York.

The artist Loren Munk (born 1951) is primarily known for his YouTube nickname James Kalm as an uploader of videos about New York exhibitions, amongst others. He presents himself as a maker of contemporary paintings for several decades and of cubist paintings of urban imagery. Munk has received accolades for his drawings and mosaics. He differs from traditional mosaic artists by the manner in which he incorporates glass into his decorative paintings. His unique and innovative use of materials such as mirror, gold-leaf and glass mosaic affirmed him as a founding force of Kitsch Art and a leading member of New York Neo-Expressionism.
Munk's work debuted in SoHo in 1981 with a double show at J. Fields Gallery and Gabrielle Bryers. Since then, he has overseen an international career. In addition to exhibiting in Brazil, France, Germany and the United States, Munk has received national and overseas, public and private commissions. He is well represented in important collections throughout Europe, South and North America and the Middle East.
Most recently, Munk has been producing a series of paintings which tackle the subject of art itself through a historical and diagrammatic lens. Munk documents the New York art world in YouTube videos, using the name James Kalm.

Ruth Gikow (January 6, 1915 Ukraine - 1982 New York City) was an Important American Jewish woman visual artist known primarily for her work as a genre painter. Her paintings often depict human figures interacting with an urban environment.
Ruth Gikow was born in 1915 in the Ukraine. Her father, Boris, was a photographer and her mother was named Lena. In 1920 she emigrated to New York City due to civil war and pogroms against the Jewish community. The pilgrimage took around two years. Once in New York City, the Gikow family found themselves in poverty, rather than the middle-class comfort they enjoyed in Ukraine. Ruth Gikow's skill was prominent even in youth, as she excelled in drawing in elementary school and entered Washington Irving High School at age thirteen in which she furthered her art prowess.
Later, she studied at the Cooper Union Art School, where she studied under school director Austin Purvis, Jr. and regional artist John Steuart Curry. In her second year of Art School, she was awarded a scholarship which she used to work with fellow painter Raphael Soyer.
She joined the New York City WPA Federal Art Project in 1935, where she was allowed to dedicate herself to her artwork full-time. In 1939, inspired by the muralists Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, she applied and later won a commission to paint murals for Bronx Hospital, Rockefeller Center and the New York World's Fair. After the events of Pearl Harbor and once the Federal Arts Project was abandoned, Gikow's murals were sought after by New York department stores wishing to commission wall paintings. Gikow became disillusioned with mural painting due to the commercial aspect of these commissions.

Artist biography
Born at Kansas City in Missouri (USA), the multi-media artist, poet and playwright Paul Jenkins studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Art Students League in New York City. After his discharge from military service at the end of February 1946, he briefly studied playwriting with dramatist George McCalmon at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Thereafter, Jenkins spent four years studying with Japanese American artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi in New York City. His first solo exhibitions were held at Studio Paul Facchetti in Paris in 1954 and the Martha Graham Gallery in New York City in 1956. Over the past thirty years, numerous retrospectives have been curated across the globe and Jenkins’ work can found in national collections from Europe and the United States to Israel, Australia and Japan.
The diversity of his work springs from Jenkins’ wealth of eclectic influences. Some of his earliest works included what he called "interior landscapes" influenced by ancient natural forms like the caves he visited in the Ozark Mountains in his native-Missouri. Frequent student visits to the Frick Collection in New York fostered a love of the great masters: Bellini, Holbein, Vermeer, Rembrandt, de la Tour, Turner and Goya. In compliment, lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco of Buddha, polychrome sculptures of the enlightened Bodhisattva, the Buddhist goddess of mercy Kuan-Yin, Indian bronzes of Hindu god Shiva, and statues of meditative Buddhist lohans. Serving in the US Naval Air Corps during the Second World War, Jenkins painted watercolours of Japanese Kabuki dancers and read the ancient Chinese poetic teachings of the I Ching and Lao Tse Tung’s Tao Te Ching...
