About the Item
Peter Stroud (English, 1921-2012) was an abstract Constructivist artist whose work evolved from strict Constructivism into explorations of color and form. Largely self-taught, he also studied part-time at the Central and Hammersmith Schools of Art and earned a teacher’s diploma from London University. A professional soldier in 1938, he was a prisoner of war from 1941 to 1945. Stroud exhibited widely, including at the ICA, RBA Galleries, the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, the Ulster Museum, and in several American museums. He held teaching positions in the U.S., notably as professor of painting at Rutgers University in New Jersey. The Peter Stroud in this year’s Masters Exhibit, a large canvas with low-contrast geometric forms, exemplifies his refined abstract style.
