About the Item
A 1940s hard edge abstract painting by Dutch artist Pieter de Haard.
This is a wonderful example of the artist's work from the 1940s, when the artist was fascinated with space and the infinity, mathematics, music, visual arts and their relationships.
As a young boy De Haard spent hours roaming local museums. He then took art classes at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts, and later in Munich.
In the 1930s de Haard began experimenting with abstraction. During WWII he read Spinoza, Kant and Goethe, where he was exposed to ideas about space and infinity, and theories of color, and studied the ideas of De Stijl movement. De Haard felt there existed a strong relationship between visual art and music, and saw this relationship exclusively in terms of actual colors.
1946, when this work was created, is the very beginning of his mathematical period, which is considered the height of his career as an artist.
This piece is framed in a contemporary frame, which has some minor wear.
The painting is in good condition.
