Sean Scully was born in Dublin, moved to London in 1949 and settled in America in the mid-1970s. Today he splits his time between New York City, Barcelona and Munich.
Having studied at the Central School of Art, Croydon College of Art and Newcastle University, Scully was awarded a Frank Knox Fellowship at Harvard University (1972 – 1973), a Harkness Fellowship in 1975 and has held teaching posts at Chelsea School of Art and Design, Goldsmith’s College, and Princeton University.
Scully is best known as a painter of monumental works in oil, although he is also a printmaker, producing woodcuts and etchings. He abandoned figurative work in the mid-1960s and has since established a reputation as an abstract painter. Drawing on the traditions of Abstract Expressionism, he creates strongly articulated pieces: canvases on heavy stretchers, abutting panels and architectural constructions that project themselves into the viewer’s space. Abandoning precise delineation for a looser, more painterly handling of paint, his use of color, subtle nuances and stark contrasts testifies to a concern with light and beauty.
He had his first major exhibition at the Rowan Gallery in 1973 and today his work is held in major public collections worldwide, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Tate, London.
Scully has exhibited across the world, one standout show being that of his ‘Wall of Light’ paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2006.
In the summer of 2015, he had a major show in Venice running concurrently with exhibitions in São Paulo; in Neuhaus, Austria, where he was the subject of the inaugural show at the new Museum Liaunig; in Cork, at the Crawford Art Gallery; and in Dublin, at the National Gallery of Ireland.
A retrospective, featuring more than 100 works, also toured various venues in China — including the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing — between 2015 and 2017. It was the first such show in China by a living, Western artist.
In 2019, Scully has an exhibition at the National Gallery, featuring new pieces inspired by the institution’s Old Masters collection.
He has won numerous awards over his 50-year career, starting with the John Moores Painting Prize in 1972 and 1974. He has also been nominated twice for the Turner Prize — in 1989 and 1993. Scully was elected a Royal Academician in 2013.

Sean Scully
Born 1945, Dublin, Ireland; lives in New York City Born in Ireland in 1945, Sean Scully was raised and educated in London. In 1975, he moved to New York where he was immediately influenced by the geometric and color field painters working in that city: Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, and, especially, Mark Rothko. Abandoning the figurative work he was pursuing at the time, Scully began working with the deliberately reduced set of motifs that have occupied him for the last twenty years. Scully gathers his motifs from everyday experience; he looks at doors, windows, road maps, and uses photography “as a means of defining the parameters of his own visual world.” He does not depict the world but finds in the world visual experiences that correspond to his artistic mission. Specifically, Scully seeks to portray the richness of life through the relationships between the colors of his characteristically dark and understated palette. The reduction of formal elements to stripes and squares allows the color relationships to be of utmost importance. In the indefinite transition zones between colors, Scully exposes the “mystery of ambivalence and uncertainty” that permeates the human experience. Sean Scully is one of the most important contemporary artists working today, and his work can be seen in museums around the world including the Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth, Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
