Description:
Dynamic and elegantly linear, this mid-century abstract ink drawing by French artist Serge Guerin showcases his refined sense of balance and rhythm. Executed in black ink on textured paper, the composition is built from tapering spires, intersecting arcs, and star-point nodes that suggest kinetic energy and architectural structure. The crisp black-and-white palette heightens the graphic impact, linking Guerin’s work to French geometric abstraction, Op Art, and Constructivist tendencies of the 1950s and 1960s. The repeated verticals read like a modern skyline while the curved bands create a counter-movement, producing a sophisticated play of positive and negative space. Guerin’s monogram appears at the lower right, and the sheet retains attractive deckled edges typical of studio-drawn works on paper. This drawing is ideal for collectors seeking minimalist modern design, linear geometry, and monochrome statement pieces; it pairs beautifully with mid-century furniture and Scandinavian interiors. Keywords that apply include French abstract drawing, geometric art, black and white minimalism, mid century modern wall art, Op Art style, and Paris school abstraction. Unframed and ready for a bespoke mount, the piece would look striking floated in a simple black or natural oak frame. From the artist’s estate, it represents a strong example of Guerin’s precise, lyrical draftsmanship and his exploration of balance, tension, and movement within a restrained visual vocabulary.

Description:
An intricate and refined mid-century ink drawing by French artist Serge Guerin (b.1916), whose work epitomises the elegance and precision of post-war geometric abstraction. Executed in black ink on textured artists paper, this composition features a network of tall, spire-like forms interconnected by fine linear structures. The result is an architectural composition that conveys rhythm, balance, and tension — a hallmark of Guerin’s sophisticated modernist style.
Each element is carefully composed, with fine cross-hatching and tonal modulation creating a sense of depth and dimensionality. The drawing’s structural intricacy and vertical dynamism evoke both architectural design and abstract sculpture, aligning Guerin’s practice with the broader Constructivist and Hard-Edge movements that flourished in mid-20th-century France. His masterful handling of line and proportion transforms pure geometry into a poetic, architectural vision.
Signed “SG” lower right, this work is a superb example of Guerin’s technical skill and visual harmony. It would suit collectors of mid-century design, French abstraction, or modern architectural art...

Pencil Signed Abstract Geometric Graphic Design Lithograph Print, Bauhaus Artist
By M. Peter Piening
Located in Surfside, FL
M. Peter Piening was born on March 14, 1908 in Grabow, Germany. He began his education at a private school in Italy, studied at the Jesuit school of Kloster Ettal in Bavaria, and attended the German Stettin Gymnasium, where he graduated in 1926. Between 1926 and 1928 Piening studied design at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. There he was taught by multiple famous twentieth-century artists, including Joseph Albers, Paul Klee and Mies van der Rohe. After receiving his master’s degree from the Bauhaus in 1929, Piening enrolled at the University of Berlin and obtained his PhD in philosophy in 1931.
Piening spent his early career free-lancing as an illustrator and artist for various publishing companies, eventually settling in Paris to work for Condé-Nast’s French publication of Vogue. In 1934 he moved to the United States to work in Condé-Nast’s New York City office. For the next two decades, Piening worked for many important advertising agencies and magazine publishers, including the N. W. Ayer and J. Walker Thompson agencies and Life and Fortune magazines. As art director for Life in the 1930s and for Fortune in the 1940s, Piening completely redesigned the layout of each magazine. He also redesigned the layouts for thirty-four other major American magazines, including Town & Country and Cosmopolitan.
Through his design work, Piening had a great impact on the American public, although the millions who encountered his work most likely never knew his name. Between 1934 and 1964, Piening designed over sixty logos and trademarks for internationally-known products and companies. His most widely-recognized logo may have been the three interlocking rings of Ballantine beer. Piening’s other trademark designs include the Lincoln Zephyr...
