About the Item

Title: Mid Century French Geometric Abstract in Blue and Black Ink on Paper by Serge Guerin (b. 1916), French Ink and gouache on paper, unframed Size: 28.5 (height) x 19.75 (width) inches Provenance: private collection, Paris, France Condition: overall good and sound; minor age toning to lower edge and light handling marks consistent with age; colours remain vivid. There is a small tear in the paper on the bottom edge. Description: A striking mid-century geometric abstraction by French modernist Serge Guerin, dated December 4, 1974. Executed in black ink and blue gouache on textured wove paper, the composition displays a precise interplay of angular and curved forms arranged in a dynamic vertical structure. The intersecting planes of blue, black and white create rhythmic movement across the page, recalling both Constructivist design and the graphic elegance of post-war French abstraction. Guerin’s refined draughtsmanship and architectural precision are evident in the intricate layering of fine linear patterns and intersecting arcs. The use of blue — one of Guerin’s signature hues — adds a cool, spatial dimension to the otherwise monochrome palette, heightening the sense of depth and optical balance. The composition’s sharp points and elongated spires lend it a futuristic quality reminiscent of Op Art and mid-century modern design. This piece exemplifies Guerin’s mastery of controlled geometry and his ongoing exploration of rhythm, proportion and form. Ideal for collectors of French abstract art, geometric modernism or mid-century works on paper. Keywords for collectors and interiors: mid century French abstract, geometric art, blue and black ink drawing, modernist gouache, Constructivist French artist, Ecole de Paris.

Mid Century French Architectural Abstract Ink Drawing Signed SG

Title: Mid Century French Architectural Abstract Ink Drawing Signed SG by Serge Guerin (b. 1916), French signed lower right “SG”, name stamped verso Ink on artists paper, unframed Size: 19.75 (height) x 25.75 (width) inches Provenance: private collection, Paris, France Condition: overall good and sound; faint age toning and minor edge wear consistent with age; ink surface crisp and well preserved. Description: An intricate and refined mid-century ink drawing by French artist Serge Guerin (b.1916), whose work epitomises the elegance and precision of post-war geometric abstraction. Executed in black ink on textured artists paper, this composition features a network of tall, spire-like forms interconnected by fine linear structures. The result is an architectural composition that conveys rhythm, balance, and tension — a hallmark of Guerin’s sophisticated modernist style. Each element is carefully composed, with fine cross-hatching and tonal modulation creating a sense of depth and dimensionality. The drawing’s structural intricacy and vertical dynamism evoke both architectural design and abstract sculpture, aligning Guerin’s practice with the broader Constructivist and Hard-Edge movements that flourished in mid-20th-century France. His masterful handling of line and proportion transforms pure geometry into a poetic, architectural vision. Signed “SG” lower right, this work is a superb example of Guerin’s technical skill and visual harmony. It would suit collectors of mid-century design, French abstraction, or modern architectural art...

Pencil Signed Abstract Geometric Graphic Design Lithograph Print, Bauhaus Artist
By M. Peter Piening
Located in Surfside, FL
M. Peter Piening was born on March 14, 1908 in Grabow, Germany. He began his education at a private school in Italy, studied at the Jesuit school of Kloster Ettal in Bavaria, and attended the German Stettin Gymnasium, where he graduated in 1926. Between 1926 and 1928 Piening studied design at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. There he was taught by multiple famous twentieth-century artists, including Joseph Albers, Paul Klee and Mies van der Rohe. After receiving his master’s degree from the Bauhaus in 1929, Piening enrolled at the University of Berlin and obtained his PhD in philosophy in 1931. Piening spent his early career free-lancing as an illustrator and artist for various publishing companies, eventually settling in Paris to work for Condé-Nast’s French publication of Vogue. In 1934 he moved to the United States to work in Condé-Nast’s New York City office. For the next two decades, Piening worked for many important advertising agencies and magazine publishers, including the N. W. Ayer and J. Walker Thompson agencies and Life and Fortune magazines. As art director for Life in the 1930s and for Fortune in the 1940s, Piening completely redesigned the layout of each magazine. He also redesigned the layouts for thirty-four other major American magazines, including Town & Country and Cosmopolitan. Through his design work, Piening had a great impact on the American public, although the millions who encountered his work most likely never knew his name. Between 1934 and 1964, Piening designed over sixty logos and trademarks for internationally-known products and companies. His most widely-recognized logo may have been the three interlocking rings of Ballantine beer. Piening’s other trademark designs include the Lincoln Zephyr...
