Description:
A striking geometric abstraction by French modernist Serge Guerin, executed in black ink on textured wove paper. The composition is defined by an intricate network of interlocking lines and pointed forms that stretch vertically and horizontally across the sheet. Guerin’s mastery of precision is evident in the balance between sharp linearity and the organic rhythm of curves and intersecting planes.
The interplay of light and shadow within the blackened sections creates a sense of architectural depth — as if the forms were scaffolds or tensile structures suspended in space. This duality between delicacy and strength is a hallmark of Guerin’s mid-century abstraction, reflecting influences from Constructivism and architectural design while remaining deeply individual in expression. The balance between openness and density, order and improvisation, gives the work its quiet but commanding presence.
An exemplary example of Guerin’s linear abstraction, this piece would appeal to collectors of French post-war modernism, minimalist ink drawings, and architectural geometric art. Perfect for framing, it brings a refined graphic energy to both vintage and contemporary interiors. Keywords for collectors and interiors: mid century French abstract, geometric ink drawing, modernist French art, architectural abstraction, Constructivist influence, Ecole de Paris.

Description:
An intricate and refined mid-century ink drawing by French artist Serge Guerin (b.1916), whose work epitomises the elegance and precision of post-war geometric abstraction. Executed in black ink on textured artists paper, this composition features a network of tall, spire-like forms interconnected by fine linear structures. The result is an architectural composition that conveys rhythm, balance, and tension — a hallmark of Guerin’s sophisticated modernist style.
Each element is carefully composed, with fine cross-hatching and tonal modulation creating a sense of depth and dimensionality. The drawing’s structural intricacy and vertical dynamism evoke both architectural design and abstract sculpture, aligning Guerin’s practice with the broader Constructivist and Hard-Edge movements that flourished in mid-20th-century France. His masterful handling of line and proportion transforms pure geometry into a poetic, architectural vision.
Signed “SG” lower right, this work is a superb example of Guerin’s technical skill and visual harmony. It would suit collectors of mid-century design, French abstraction, or modern architectural art...
