Description:
This refined mid-century French abstract drawing by Serge Guerin (b. 1916) showcases the artist’s meticulous command of line, rhythm, and proportion. Executed in fine black ink on textured paper, the work features a lattice-like arrangement of intersecting arcs and verticals, forming an intricate geometric web that appears both architectural and ethereal. The clean precision of Guerin’s linework, coupled with the elegant symmetry of the composition, gives the piece a meditative, almost musical quality—each curve and axis delicately balanced to create a sense of visual harmony and tension.
Guerin’s artistic style bridges geometric abstraction and modernist minimalism, reflecting the influence of mid-20th-century design and the Parisian avant-garde. His work shares affinities with the Constructivist and Op Art movements, yet retains a distinct sensitivity and organic rhythm. The deliberate use of negative space accentuates the fragility and grace of the linear structure, inviting the viewer to explore the balance between order and fluidity.
This drawing exemplifies Guerin’s ongoing exploration of structure and motion within a restrained monochrome palette. Its subtle interplay of precision and spontaneity makes it a timeless choice for collectors drawn to modern French abstraction, mid century graphic art, or architectural line compositions. The piece would sit beautifully within both contemporary and minimalist interiors, either framed simply in black or floated within a shadow mount to emphasize its crisp geometry. From the artist’s estate, this work stands as a testament to Guerin’s refined sense of form and balance.

Description:
An intricate and refined mid-century ink drawing by French artist Serge Guerin (b.1916), whose work epitomises the elegance and precision of post-war geometric abstraction. Executed in black ink on textured artists paper, this composition features a network of tall, spire-like forms interconnected by fine linear structures. The result is an architectural composition that conveys rhythm, balance, and tension — a hallmark of Guerin’s sophisticated modernist style.
Each element is carefully composed, with fine cross-hatching and tonal modulation creating a sense of depth and dimensionality. The drawing’s structural intricacy and vertical dynamism evoke both architectural design and abstract sculpture, aligning Guerin’s practice with the broader Constructivist and Hard-Edge movements that flourished in mid-20th-century France. His masterful handling of line and proportion transforms pure geometry into a poetic, architectural vision.
Signed “SG” lower right, this work is a superb example of Guerin’s technical skill and visual harmony. It would suit collectors of mid-century design, French abstraction, or modern architectural art...

Pencil Signed Abstract Geometric Graphic Design Lithograph Print, Bauhaus Artist
By M. Peter Piening
Located in Surfside, FL
M. Peter Piening was born on March 14, 1908 in Grabow, Germany. He began his education at a private school in Italy, studied at the Jesuit school of Kloster Ettal in Bavaria, and attended the German Stettin Gymnasium, where he graduated in 1926. Between 1926 and 1928 Piening studied design at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. There he was taught by multiple famous twentieth-century artists, including Joseph Albers, Paul Klee and Mies van der Rohe. After receiving his master’s degree from the Bauhaus in 1929, Piening enrolled at the University of Berlin and obtained his PhD in philosophy in 1931.
Piening spent his early career free-lancing as an illustrator and artist for various publishing companies, eventually settling in Paris to work for Condé-Nast’s French publication of Vogue. In 1934 he moved to the United States to work in Condé-Nast’s New York City office. For the next two decades, Piening worked for many important advertising agencies and magazine publishers, including the N. W. Ayer and J. Walker Thompson agencies and Life and Fortune magazines. As art director for Life in the 1930s and for Fortune in the 1940s, Piening completely redesigned the layout of each magazine. He also redesigned the layouts for thirty-four other major American magazines, including Town & Country and Cosmopolitan.
Through his design work, Piening had a great impact on the American public, although the millions who encountered his work most likely never knew his name. Between 1934 and 1964, Piening designed over sixty logos and trademarks for internationally-known products and companies. His most widely-recognized logo may have been the three interlocking rings of Ballantine beer. Piening’s other trademark designs include the Lincoln Zephyr...

"Second Theme" 1949 Abstract Mid 20th Century Geometric Non-Objective Hard Edge
Burgoyne A. Diller (American, 1906-1965) "Second Theme" 1949. Pencil and crayon on paper. Signed and dated 'D. 49' (lower right). Image: 9 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. Andre Emmerich Gallery, New York. BURGOYNE DILLER (1906-1965) Recognized as the first American painter to embrace the tenets of Neo-Plasticism, Burgoyne Diller made an important contribution to the development of non-objective art in the United States. Working in a hard-edged geometric style, he produced paintings, drawings, and collages that paved the way for the development of American Minimalism during the 1960s and 70s.
Born in New York City in 1906, Diller began painting and drawing as a teenager growing up in Battle Creek, Michigan. Later, while attending Michigan State University in East Lansing on an athletic scholarship, he made weekend visits to the Art Institute of Chicago, where he familiarized himself with Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting. He was especially drawn to the landscapes and still lives of Paul Cézanne, who modeled color to create structure and volume.
In 1929, Diller moved to Manhattan and enrolled at the Art Students League, where his teachers included such progressive-minded painters as Jan Matulka, Hans Hofmann, and George Grosz. Hofmann's concept of the "push-pull" effect of form and color exerted a strong influence on his early work, as did his growing familiarity with Analytical and Synthetic Cubism, German Expressionism, and other vanguard European styles. Diller had the opportunity to see some of this work firsthand, but he also kept abreast of developments abroad by reading journals such as Cahiers d'Art.
Diller completed his studies at the League in 1933, the year he had his first solo exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in New York. It was around this time that his paintings began to show the influence of the reductive, pared-down geometric compositions of the Dutch Constructivist Piet Mondrian and the equally restrained compositions of Kasimir Malevich and El Lissitsky...
