Having a Cigarette Among Pink and Blue is an intimate large-scale plein-air painting by British awarded artist Shizico Yi, created in her garden where a historic avenue of 130-year-old lime trees welcomes every season.
This deeply personal artwork pays tribute to her late partner, who often stood in that very corner—cigarette in hand—watching evening light dissolve into the soft pink and blue hues of dusk.
From indoors, Shizico would glimpse these quiet moments through the window. Their exchanged smiles—tender, wordless, full of shared understanding—now live inside this painting. The use of pure 18K gold leaf is a symbolic gesture: gold becomes memory, light becomes devotion, and the garden becomes a sanctuary for love that endures.
This artwork belongs to Yi’s long-standing project Constant Gardener (est. 2015), a body of work honouring the healing power of nature. It also echoes her later Golden Sunlit Series, where the warmth of yellow brings emotional restoration for those moving through grief.
Shizico Yi’s expressive brushwork and lyrical palette capture the essence of her Memorial Garden—a place she has cultivated for a decade, and a living space for her plein-air practice. This painting is both a landscape and an elegy, preserving a fleeting moment of presence, intimacy, and remembrance.

Dr. Shizico Yi is a London based artist, working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
