About the Item
Foxgloves Blue in Yellow is part of Shizico Yi’s celebrated Summer Bloom series, a body of work in which the artist honours the arrival of summer—her most treasured season for plein air painting. The visual language of the series draws inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints and the fluid traditions of calligraphy, combining Eastern aesthetic sensibility with contemporary painterly expression.
Blue has long held a profound meaning for Yi. Since childhood, she has been drawn to its rarity—one of the scarcest colours in the plant world. Because the sky carries this colour so dominantly, nature seldom repeats it in its flora. This scarcity gives blue a sense of magic, intention, and emotional weight. In this series, Yi reimagines her garden blooms in shades of blue, transforming their natural colours to explore atmosphere, memory, and resonance.
Begun in 2022, the Summer Bloom project continues to evolve each year. The works are crafted using a range of rich materials—impasto, gesso, gold leaf, and oil—bringing depth, luminosity, and texture to Yi’s expressive brushwork. Each painting distils the vibrancy of her garden at its peak, capturing the living pulse of the season.
In Foxgloves Blue in Yellow, Yi works with a carefully restrained palette of primary colours. Variations of blue sit against notes of red and yellow, creating a tension between contrast and harmony. Many paintings in this series explore a near-monochrome approach, revealing the subtle interplay of tone, balance, and emotional movement within a limited spectrum.
The result is a luminous work that reflects not only the shifting seasons of the artist’s own garden, but also the intimate relationship between Yi, her materials, and the quiet, contemplative poetry of nature.

Dr. Shizico Yi is a London based artist, working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories . With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
