About the Item
Sunset Song was created entirely en plein air, painted directly under the fading light of late-summer and autumn sunsets — and often till moonlight hours. With no artificial light, Shizico Yi embraced the night with absolute presence. In near-darkness, she relied solely on instinct, memory, and decades of intimate knowledge of her own hand-mixed pigments.
Working through dusk into night, Shizico translated the shifting skyline and the soft interplay of light and shadow through feeling rather than sight. Each painting was only fully revealed the following morning, turning every work into a ritual of suspense and discovery. This practice rekindled a sense of excitement and renewal in her studio — a celebration of intuition, trust, and craft.
This body of work is a meditation on seeing without looking — an exploration of sensory memory, gesture, and the deep expressive power of painting. The poetic contrast between the glowing evening sky and the velvety silhouettes of lime trees creates a quiet stillness. This resonant work has become one of Shizico’s most celebrated pieces of the year — a subtle triumph of vision, devotion and progress in her art practice.

“These new abstract paintings attempt to push impressionism forward toward Matisse; it is a daring courtship between colour and the simplicity of line and form. From there I move closer to the language of Howard Hodgkin — painting not the scene as it is, but the emotional vibration behind each stroke and colour. Matisse and Hodgkin sit at two ends of the dial; the space in between is my playground for this New Abstract series”

Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.

Shizico Yi's work aims to explore artistic obsession through repetitive documentation of the domestic and the everyday.
