About the Item
Sunset Song was created entirely en plein air, painted directly under the fading light of late summer and autumn sunsets—often continuing into moonlit hours. Working without artificial light, Shizico Yi embraced near-darkness with absolute presence, relying solely on instinct, sensory memory, and decades of intimate knowledge of her hand-mixed pigments. Each work is guided by a focused exploration of a restrained colour palette.
The palette of this painting responds to the intensified sunset skies of Northern Europe in 2025—a year marked by the peak of Solar Cycle 25. Increased solar activity produced heightened atmospheric phenomena, resulting in unusually vivid sunset colours and auroral effects visible near the artist’s studio. These conditions inform the painting’s radiant chromatic energy.
Painted through dusk into night, the work was only fully revealed the following morning, transforming each canvas into a ritual of suspense and discovery. This process rekindled a sense of renewal in Yi’s practice—celebrating intuition, trust, and devotion to craft.
Sunset Song is a meditation on seeing without looking. The poetic contrast between glowing skies and velvety silhouettes of lime trees creates a profound stillness. This work stands as one of the most resonant achievements of the series—a quiet triumph of vision and artistic evolution.
