About the Item

Oil on canvas – 31.9 x 25.6 in (81 x 65 cm) Framed dimensions: 34.6 x 28.3 in (88 x 72 cm) Black or light wood floater frame (collector's choice) – Signed by the artist – Certificate of authenticity – Ready to hang In Grammaire des Livres (Grammar of Books), Sophie Dumont continues her exploration of stylized libraries as mental architectures of knowledge. Rather than depicting identifiable books, the artist reveals their underlying structure — a silent syntax composed of rhythms, vertical elements, and layered horizontal planes. The composition is carefully balanced, organized into compartments that suggest an internal logic, much like a visual language governed by invisible rules. Simplified book spines become signs rather than objects, interacting through repetition, variation, and interruption, echoing the construction of a written sentence. The restrained palette — combining beiges, ochres, greys, deep reds, and blacks — creates a timeless, contemplative atmosphere. Built through successive layers of oil paint, the surface carries a subtle depth, evoking accumulated memory and the passage of time. Here, the book transcends its function as a reading object to become a symbol of transmission, structure, and continuity. Grammaire des Livres stands as a pictorial reflection on knowledge, culture, and the quiet order that sustains meaning. About the artist Sophie Dumont is a French contemporary painter based in Normandy. Working primarily in oil on canvas, she develops a distinctive abstract language inspired by landscapes, artist studios, and stylized libraries. Her work is characterized by layered compositions, subtle chromatic balances, and a strong sense of structure, combining material depth with quiet contemplation. She has exhibited widely in France and internationally, including in museum exhibitions, and her paintings are held in private and institutional collections worldwide.

Abstract Composition, oil painting by Pierre Coquet
Located in Montfort l’Amaury, FR
Pierre Coquet – Abstract Composition Reference number A256 Framed with a natural oak floated frame painted in black 34 x 55 cm frame included (29 x 50 cm without frame) This work is painted with oil on a paper that is mounted on a board and placed in a made to measure wood strectcher. Stamp of the signature in the bottom right Pierre was very sensitive to abstract paintings. He did a lot of abstract works melting colors and shapes in different atmosphere and style. Nevertheless he could come back to figuration and again to abstraction with no precise period of time. Abstract paintings by Pierre Coquet represent a large part of his production. The constant search for balance between shapes and colors as well as his passion for Nicolas de Staël, André Lanskoy, Alfred Mannessier… takes him on different paths from what we know of him. His way of painting is strong and thoughtful, the lines stretch out and the harmonious touches, applied with sobriety, reveal a great sense of color. Provenance : Workshop of the artist (stamped and numbered on the back) Pierre Coquet (1926-2021) is a French painter who was born in Limas near Lyon, France. He entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon in 1942 and followed the teaching of Antoine Chartres, Henri Vielly and René Chancrin. He won a prize in 1945 and joined a movement that wanted to be outside of any school whose name ends with “ism”, (like impressionism, cubism…) between figuration and the renaissance of Abstract Art, bringing together young generations under thirty and eager not to submit to any technique. The “Sanzism” (literally without « ism ») will bring together, among others, painters: James Bansac, Roger Bravard, André Chaix, Jean Mélinand, Paul Clair, André Cottavoz, Pierre Doye, Jean Fusaro, Jacques Truphémus, André Lauran...

Bibliophile, Original Contemporary Abstract Book Painting, Modern Still Life Art
Located in Deddington, GB
Bibliophile' explores the energy of precariousness... are the forms perfectly balanced, or are they near to collapse? Using a carefully mediated colour palette which is by turns both recessive and complementary, I'm interested in the ambiguity of an image which might signify something both celebratory and chaotic, with touchpoints to the analog world of books and the digital world of data. Jeremy Morgan...
