About the Item

An exceptionally rare and large painting by renowned American fashion designer and 80s icon Stephen Sprouse (1953-2004). This excellent composition by Sprouse includes interplaying vertical registers of grey and white separated by bold black outlines. Sprouse was a major figure in the NYC art and fashion scene in the 1980s, befriending and working with Andy Warhol and Keith Haring among others. This particular work, composed of shades of metallic silver, white, and black, relates closely to Sprouse’s designs from the mid 1980s. Namely, his Fall 1984 collaboration with NASA (Sprouse was obsessed with space) featured similar shades of shimmering silver, white, and black. Sprouse was also influenced by his friend and colleague Andy Warhol’s silver factory from the 1960s - he even decorated his NYC showroom in silver. The work was gifted by Sprouse to his longtime publicist, Edwin Filipowski, who passed away in 2020. Filipowski helped sell out Sprouse’s Fall 1984 show at The Ritz club in NYC, which featured his NASA collaboration. Sprouse’s artwork is very scarce, with only a few other examples having appeared for sale (all others were also gifts to friends). One recent sale was a small canvas he gifted to Keith Haring, which sold at Sothebys in October 2020 for $21,420. Another large canvas with similar color scheme sold at Wright in May 2018 for $17,290. Despite his untimely death, Sprouse’s legacy as an artist and designer continues to shine through massive collaborations with brands like Louis Vuitton. His work can also be found in numerous important museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This work is acrylic on canvas and is unframed as intended. It is apparently unsigned. Provenance: The artist; (gift from above) Estate of Edwin Filipowski (1962-2020); Acquired from above via Doyle NY (10/27/2021, lot 91) About the artist: Stephen Sprouse was a visionary American fashion designer and artist. Sprouse is famous for his iconic graffiti patterns and is associated with the downtown New York City music and arts scene of the 1970s and 1980s. His irreverent, luxurious and radical collections serve as the link between a Warholian ethos and aesthetic and contemporary designers. Sprouse cultivated a distinct retro-futuristic style, equally influenced by high and low culture, that continues to excite and engage the fashion and art world in equal measure. Sprouse began his fashion career at 14, interning with Bill Blass in New York City, and worked in Halston's studio from 1971–1975, until he decided to move downtown and focus on developing his own work. He debuted his first collection in 1984, at The Ritz nightclub to 2,500 of New York City's most influential downtown tastemakers, artists and musicians (including Andy Warhol). The collection was a holy trinity of art, fashion and punk and blurred the distinction between fashion past and present and high and low culture.
