About the Item
The understated palette is the surprise here, given that it’s Mexico. No blinding white plaster walls. No bright green palms, hot pink bougainvillea and turquoise sea on the horizon, possibly a palette that sells better to tourists. Instead, this hillside coastal village, viewed from a rooftop in midday light, is expressed almost as abstract planes and angles, some deep in shadows and others gently warmed in hazy sunlight. Nuns and ordinary townspeople gather to chat, or go on their way taking the steep stairs, the heat kept at bay by sombreros and the breezes coming from the sea glimpsed a little way off. It feels like another century ago.
