About the Item
Rozetta Translucent VBG is a unique medium size contemporary modern paper relief by renowned Polish-Dutch artist Eliza Kopec. This relief is a typical example of her preferred minimalist abstract geometric vocabulary, formal and strict, but at the same intriguing and of a visual beauty that is very pleasing to the eye. Carefully cut round paper elements are mounted in a shadow box with a light weight plexiglas front into a plain white background, allowing shadows and colour reflections to fill the spaces in between. Looking at this work of art from upfront mainly shows the basic composition of the paper elements and a subtle reflection in between. But when moving to the opposing sides of this work, the full effect of pattern comes into play. This principle also places this type of work in the long tradition of optical art and kinetic art.
Eliza Kopec (1960, Poland) graduated with a BA in graphic art and drawing from the (today) Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. After her graduation she started working as an independent visual artist and initially made many limited edition prints for numerous Dutch magazines. At the turn of the century she became more and more focussed on making abstract reliefs and paintings based on regularity and geometry.
She works with different forms and sizes: she paints on canvas, makes installations with paper and creates paper reliefs. Sometimes monochrome, just white or black, making the repetition and shapes in a work even more apparent. At the same time she also creates bright multi-coloured work. Her work is often built up from basic geometric shapes such as lines, squares and circles and translates rhythm, texts and number series into abstract images, for instance represented by a defined range of colours. Starting point for many of her works are often concrete subjects like poems, newspaper articles or arithmetic principles. By translating these concrete subjects into shapes or colours she aims to create universal images of beauty.
Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows at galleries, art fairs, art circles and museums throughout Europe, including Pulchri Studio, Ars Aemula Naturae, KunstRAI and the COBRA museum. Private and public collections including work by Eliza are among others the Yellow Fellow Foundation (collection Verhoeven), Royal KPN, Royal PostNL, Cosmopolitan Hotel Las Vegas and Museum Het Valkhof. In 2018 a monograph was published covering many examples of her paintings, reliefs, drawings and mixed media works.

form a large part of a working artist’s life."
With CHEF'S HAT, a recent and evolving work, I am moving into more dimensionality and space.
My intention is to push patterned and embellished surfaces on paper from its naturally flat
surface into a more structural and spatial plane. This involves making sculptural pieces from
paper and experimenting with new construction methods using strips and lengths of paper
over-lapped and fastened together, shaped into objects with physical presence. I feel I am
migrating from the flat surface into the third dimension. I envision the paper constructions
as a landscape to be wandered in and out of, through and around, a space that invites all
and sundry to enter on their own terms. I hold firmly to the belief that my work exhibits a
playfulness that belies a more serious assessment of our social world. I am interested in how
something that is initially perceived as frivolous and celebratory can constitute a reaction
against and resistance to the shadowy world of misfortune, hard luck, and weariness.
