Born in Lima, Peru, Victor-Raul Garcia was raised by his maternal grandmother with whom he immigrated to the United States at age 6. An abstract painter and collage artist, he has lived and worked in Europe and the US, and currently maintains his studio in Sullivan County, NY. His auto-didactic work is the result of a relentless passion to make his own reality, an innate resourcefulness and curiosity, endless days of continued experimentation, and an all-encompassing necessity to communicate through art.
His art has been described as a subtle romance between expressionism and street art. By intertwining tactile and non-tactile elements through multi-layering techniques, he mirrors the complexities of his personal story, the absurdities of past and present history, and the altered state of social conditions and interactions.
“Layers are the distinction between past and present, old and new, buried and rediscovered. The process I use in my work I call ‘artchaeology’. With painting, I am stripping away layers to unravel a hidden mystery or putting on layers to add mystery to what’s hidden. With collage, the layering process involves the juxtaposition of subject, time, and place in a tongue in cheek manner, creating an indirect visual commentary. I believe we all have a physicality, personality and an essence which is what I hope to portray in each piece.”
