About the Item
The Corallium works were inspired by the rejuvenation of the coral reefs in the Playa Santa Bay in Puerto Rico. 15 years ago, the reefs were almost completely decimated due to pollution and boat traffic. In 2011, the Obama administration undertook an extensive federal project to bring back the coral reefs. The reefs were restored and thrived until the summer of 2023 when the sea temperature reached 104 and the bleaching process occurred, killing the habitat in the reefs.
Coral reefs are some of the most diverse and essential ecosystems on Earth. Besides supporting more species per unit area than any other marine environment, they also form a barrier that protects coastal land and communities.

Virginia Bradley is a contemporary abstract painter based in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. She was a Professor of Art at the University of Delaware. Her practice revolves around the transformation of materials through physical and chemical processes, rooted in an experimental approach that aligns with the concept of alchemy. Her work is informed by research into natural phenomena, as well as geological and oceanographic formations. She intervenes in the surface through actions such as pouring paint, sanding, drawing, and printing, building layers that evolve over time. Her studio serves as a laboratory where materials interact and undergo continuous transformation. Bradley has received the Massachusetts Cultural Council Finalist Fellowship (2020), a McKnight Foundation Fellowship, and an Arts Midwest/NEA Fellowship. She has participated in artist residencies and completed several Percent for Art commissions for the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows across the United States and Europe.

The marine world is constantly shifting and changing as I explore the Playa Santa reefs. Sealife magically appears for a moment – and then is just a fleeting memory.

The sunlight spills through the sea to create an ethereal atmosphere as I glide toward the surface. The contrast between light and dark becomes a passage from one realm to another.

Another woven habitat hidden in the coral reef for protection. I imagine a buzzing underwater bee hive when I unravel this work.
