About the Item
This captivating original mixed media abstract painting, titled “The Embrace”, is a emotionally evocative work by renowned Denver modernist artist Wilma Fiori (1929–2019). Created using collage and ink on paper, this one-of-a-kind piece beautifully showcases Fiori’s signature style—layered textures, gestural abstraction, and a deep sensitivity to color and composition.
Dominated by serene tones of pale blue and seafoam green, the painting radiates a quiet intimacy and emotional depth. The interplay of soft, soothing colors with rich, tactile textures invites close viewing and personal interpretation, making it a stunning focal point for any contemporary or modern interior.
Signed by the artist in the lower right, the piece is inscribed “The Embrace” lower left center, and marked 1/1 in the lower left corner—confirming its status as a unique, limited-edition work. Fiori’s initials and date also appear on the verso, adding provenance and authenticity.
Presented in a custom archival-quality frame, the total framed dimensions are 20 ¼ x 25 ¼ inches, with the image size measuring 11 ¼ x 16 ½ inches. The elegant frame complements the artwork’s delicate balance of boldness and tranquility.

About the Artist – Wilma Fiori (1929–2019):
Wilma Fiori, born Wilma Denny in Youngstown, Ohio, was a pioneering figure in Colorado’s abstract and modern art scene. After earning a BFA from Loretto Heights College in Denver, she later pursued a Master's in Anthropology at the University of Denver, where her exposure to Native American art and textiles deeply informed her later work.
Fiori’s abstract style drew inspiration from ethnographic patterns, gestural painting, and her mentorship under Colorado modernist Dale Chisman at the Art Students League of Denver. She also collaborated with artists such as Jeffery Keith, Quang Ho, Bill Joseph, and Mark Lunning, building a legacy that spanned over three decades of exhibitions across Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, and New York.

Although Fiori was born in Ohio, she grew up in Great Bend, Kansas before moving to Colorado to attend Loretto Heights College, where she received her BFA. However, after she graduated in 1952, she discovered her passion for anthropology, and in 1979, she received a Master of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Denver. Fiori was fortunate to work as a curatorial assistant to Richard Conn in the Native Arts Department of the Denver Art Museum. The Denver Art Museum was the first Fine Art Museum in the United States to show Native American Art. The pottery and textiles from the Southwestern tribes inspired Fiori’s fascination with geometric designs and like many of her contemporary artists, it contributed to her shift towards abstract painting. In 1987, Fiori met Dale Chisman, a prominent Colorado artist, and studied under him at the Art Students League of Denver until 2007. She also met and studied alongside other talented Colorado artists including Bill Joseph, Jeffery Keith, Quang Ho, and Mark Lunning. Fiori exhibited her artwork for over 30 years in Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, and New York.
