About the Item

19th Century English Folk Art School Portrait of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Oil on canvas, 13 x 15 inches Provenance: Iona Antiques As normal these folk art paintings are unsigned This charming 19th century English Folk Art portrait depicts a small Cavalier King Charles Spaniel reclining on a grassy bank beneath an expansive sky. The artist captures the character of the dog with delightful directness, conveying its alert gaze, glossy black and tan coat, and gentle presence. Paintings of companion animals from the Folk Art tradition hold a special place in English art history, reflecting the affection and pride of their owners at a time when such portraits were commissioned as keepsakes of beloved pets. Unlike the more formal animal portraits of celebrated painters, Folk Art examples such as this are treasured for their naïve charm, honesty, and intimacy. Works of this nature are increasingly sought after by collectors of English vernacular painting, decorative arts, and dog portraiture. The painting is housed in a simple gilt frame of suitable period character. A delightful and authentic piece of 19th century English Folk Art, with provenance from Iona Antiques.

James Cassie was born at Keithhall near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, the son of a prosperous tea and spirit merchant. Although briefly a pupil of the artist James Giles, Cassie was largely self-taught. He began his career as a painter of animals and portraits, but on moving to Aberdeen he increasingly turned his attention to local seascapes and coastal scenes, especially at dawn and sunset. He favored these outdoor scenes but continued to paint some domestic subjects and portraits throughout his life. In 1869 he moved to Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy. Shortly before his death in 1879 he was elected an Academician. This piece is framed in its original frame and the painting is signed lower right and inscribed on the reverse. From the inscription on the reverse, this painting was purchased from an important house sale...
