About the Item
3rd Version's (Ben Patterson) "Masks We Wear, Wanting to Grow" is a 2022 oil painting on cradled panel measuring 10 x 10 x 1.5 inches. The work is unframed and ready to hang. This compact yet evocative square-format painting features a realistically rendered young rhinoceros outfitted in a stitched, body-hugging costume that gently reshapes its form. Set in a golden savanna filled with layered grasses and silhouetted acacia trees, the background glows in warm tones that balance the monochrome gray of the animal.
The rhino’s face is painted with a high degree of realism, capturing its leathery skin and watchful gaze. In contrast, the rest of its body is stylized into a soft, padded garment that reads both as protective and performative. Patterson blends these visual languages to offer a meditation on strength, vulnerability, and transformation.
"Wanting to Grow" continues the artist’s ongoing "Masks We Wear" series, which explores the roles and identities we inhabit. This piece conveys yearning and transition—a small creature dressed for something greater, caught between its current form and imagined future. Intimate in scale yet rich in meaning, the painting offers an elegant reflection on becoming.

Ben Patterson, working under the moniker 3rd Version, produces imaginative paintings that synthesize high realism with lowbrow illustration techniques from his Colorado studio. Born in Mesa, Arizona in 1982, Patterson developed his "highlow" approach to create cohesive works featuring meticulously rendered animals integrated with graphic, two-dimensional design elements. This method reflects his artistic philosophy centered on contradictions and unexpected juxtapositions. Patterson's career trajectory began with illustration-style characters addressing complex social concepts before shifting toward realistic animal subjects that examine environmental and social issues. At 27, he committed to full-time painting, guided by the principle that each artwork should influence the next creation. His 2022 achievements included producing 57 paintings, exhibiting in over 16 group shows spanning Los Angeles to Philadelphia, and completing a large-scale mural at Fiddler's Green in Colorado. His hand-painted surreal worlds are represented by select galleries across the United States including Abend Gallery.
