Biography: Benton Henderson Clark (1895–1964)
Early Life and Artistic Foundations Born in Coshocton, Ohio, in 1895, Benton Henderson Clark grew up in a picturesque rural valley near the old Ohio Canal, a setting that instilled in him a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. His artistic journey began under the mentorship of Arthur Woelfle, a local artist who recognized Clark as his most talented student and urged him to pursue formal training. Following this advice, Clark moved to New York City in 1913 to study at the National Academy of Design, later refining his skills at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1915. His early career was marked by versatility; he sold calendar illustrations to support his studies and eventually took a position in the art department of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Culver City, California, where he gained early exposure to the dramatic storytelling that would later define his painting style.
The "Eastern Illustrator of the West" Clark became widely known as an "Eastern illustrator of the West," a unique distinction for an artist who painted the American frontier primarily from his studio in New York City. After returning to the East Coast in 1932, he shared a studio with his brother, fellow illustrator Matt Clark, and established himself as a premier commercial artist. He was in high demand during the Golden Age of Illustration, creating dynamic covers and story art for the nation’s leading periodicals, including The Saturday Evening Post, McCall's, Cosmopolitan, and Good Housekeeping. Despite living in the East, his dedication to authenticity often led him to travel West to gather background material, ensuring his depictions of the frontier were grounded in reality.
Style, Strengths, and Legacy Clark’s artistic strength lay in his ability to capture high-stakes drama and kinetic energy, heavily influenced by the "Brandywine School" tradition of Harvey Dunn and the western dynamism of Frederic Remington. He was particularly celebrated for his mastery of equine anatomy; as the son of a harness maker, Clark possessed an intimate knowledge of horses, allowing him to paint them with a realism and vitality that few contemporaries could match. His brushwork was characterized by a loose, energetic confidence that bridged the gap between commercial illustration and fine art. A member of the Society of Illustrators, Clark continued to work until his death in 1964, leaving behind a legacy of vibrant murals and illustrations that romanticized the American spirit. Benton Clark
Born in Coshocton, Ohio, Benton Clark became an eastern illustrator of the West in the dramatic tradition of Frederic Remington and especially loved painting horses. He also did murals that are in Chicago and Columbus, Ohio. Growing up in Coshocton, he had a picturesque rural setting of woods and valleys near the old Ohio Canal. A group of artists were working there, and one of them, Arthur Woelfle, gave Clark his first lessons and encouraged him to seek further training. Later Woelfle said that of all his students Clark was the most talented. In 1913, he went to New York City to study at the National Academy of Design and in 1915 to Chicago at the Art Institute. He sold magazine cover and calendar illustrations and in 1925, began illustration work for "Liberty" and "Outer's Recreation" magazines. He also illustrated for "Saturday Evening Post" and had a period of working for Metro Goldwyn Mayer's art department in Culver City, California. Major influences on him were Harvey Dunn, Frank Hoffman, and Frederic Remington, and in 1932, he became a member of the Society of Illustrators. In 1932, he returned to New York City and did western illustrations for leading magazines such as "Saturday Evening Post," "Mc Call's" and "Good Housekeeping,", a job that took him West for subject matter. He shared a studio with his brother, Matt Clark, also a noted illustrator. He died in his hometown of Coshocton, preparing to do an historic mural for his high school.
