About the Item
Cahuilla/Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians/Apache
Billy Soza War Soldier was a pioneering Native American artist and activist whose work powerfully reflects the intersections of Indigenous identity, political resistance, and personal experience. Born on the Soboba Indian Reservation in Southern California, Soza studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, where he worked alongside influential contemporaries like T.C. Cannon and Fritz Scholder .
A Vietnam War veteran, Soza became a prominent figure in the American Indian Movement (AIM) during the 1960s and 1970s, participating in pivotal events such as the Wounded Knee Occupation and the Alcatraz Island occupation . His art, characterized by bold symbolism and socio-political commentary, often explores themes of cultural survival, colonial impact, and the complexities of Native American identity.
Soza's works are held in esteemed collections, including:
Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C.
Institute of American Indian Arts Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA), Santa Fe, NM
Gorman Museum of Native American Art, University of California, Davis
Heard Museum, Phoenix, AZ
Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis, IN
His pieces have also been featured in exhibitions and are part of the TIA Collection. Notably, his 1969 triptych Ghost Dance is recognized as a seminal work in contemporary Native American art, depicting a modern interpretation of the Lakota spiritual movement.
