This original wildlife study by Catherine Ingleby presents a figurative rendering of a charming Elephant and Calf, producing an endearing and intimate animal portrait. Typically bathed in the sunlight of their natural surroundings, the artist suggests a sense of warmth and luminosity, imbuing the animals with an impression of vibrancy through the use of an orange underpainting. A palette of complementary tones is applied to add to the attractiveness of the piece, as well as setting the subjects against an understated and misty backdrop. Artist Biography:
Catherine Ingleby is a renowned wildlife and equine artist based in Berkshire. Her work, with its distinctive use of vivid colour and sense of movement, bridges both the contemporary and traditional. Catherine’s ability to capture the essence of character in both her large scale paintings, and intimate portraits, has lead to her art being collected worldwide, with works in the collections of HM The Queen and many prominent racing stables. Born in Aberdeenshire, Catherine grew up surrounded by horses, resulting in a lifelong passion and admiration for these animals. After a foundation art year in Paris Catherine returned to the UK to do a BaHons in Philosophy and Classics at Durham University. However after graduating, she decided to focus on her art and to that end moved to Italy to study in an atelier in Florence. Since then Catherine has been based between London and Italy, although a considerable amount of time is spent travelling in Europe and the States completing commissioned work. Catherine enjoys painting a wide variety of horses – from the coarsest gypsy ponies to the sleekest of showjumpers. She also loves to try and capture the movement of horses within their world, and has had the chance to study a diverse range of subjects from racehorses at Epsom to the Queen’s stalking ponies at Balmoral.
''I love to paint animals, always have, and feel very privileged that I now make my living from doing so. In my current phase of work, I aim to explore the movement of animals and develop a distinctive use of colour and brushwork. There is a very simple joy in the observation of animals, in their uncomplicated joy of small things, or their unconscious beauty. I aim to explore this in my work, from the light-hearted pieces of jumping dogs to the more traditional works portraying the majesty of the big cats. I try in my art, to lift the viewer’s heart a little, and I hope to make work that is accessible to all and to bridge the gap between traditional and contemporary. I am obsessed with colour in my work, echoing the colours and patterns of the animal I have chosen to paint in bolder combinations in the background. I find the intensity of patch of pure pigment, cadmium orange next to deep purple in a tiger’s coat, for example, is far more interesting than a faithfully lifelike representation of colour.''

Catherine Ingleby
Catherine Ingleby is a renowned sporting and equestrian artist, recognized for a bold and fluid style, which captures the dynamic movement of her subjects. Her work combines the traditional elements of realism with modern usage of vivid color and abstract backgrounds. Ingleby’s paintings principally revolve around the depiction of speed and power, whether it is the fragile grace of a racing thoroughbred or the raw might of a charging bull. Brought up in Aberdeen on a farm in the Scottish Highlands, Ingleby had an unconventional childhood, large chunks of it spent on a boat with her family completing trans-global voyages. She always wanted to be an artist and studied both in Paris and Italy, training initially in a very traditional classical atelier. Ingleby believes this gave her the basis of draughtsmanship on which to develop her now distinctive style. She does both gallery work, represented by galleries in the UK and in the US, and private commissions. Ingleby lives near Henley on the Thames.
