About the Item

Claude-Lorraine Ferneley Sir Richard Sutton's Most Famous Hunter Hotspur c.1840 24 X 28.5 inches framed A genuinely famous hunter! Even mention in Whyte-Melville's riding recollections (1878). Hotspur was Sir Richard Sutton's favorite and most famous hunter. Standing 17 hands high and a full Thoroughbred he was not was not backwards in going forwards! Mentioned in Country Life December 28th 1907 'the best stud in Quorn in the past was probably that of Sir Richard Sutton, which consisted of big thoroughbred horses. Sir Richard, they say, never was as happy as when on the back of his 17h. chestnut Hotspur.' The original part of Sir Richard's will relating to this painting is attached to the reverse of this painting - Marvellous! Claude-Lorraine Ferneley (1822-1892) was the son of John E. Ferneley and was born in Melton Mowbray where he lived all of his life. Hew was named after his godfather Charles Lorraine Smith, the famous squire of Enderby, and patron of sporting painters. He was immensely talented painted and also very musical. by the age of ten when accopanying his father on working trips he would play the piano for the assembled gentry. One of his most noted pictures was the 'Quorn at Kirby Gate'. He painted a number of portraits of hunters and normally inscribed his pictures 'Melton Mowbray'. A Bachelor, Claude was said to have been a most lovable character.
