About the Item

A superb late 19th century oil on canvas portrait of a terrier by the sought after animal painter Colin Graeme Roe. The work is excellent quality, signed lower left and presented in a bespoke gilt frame. Artist: Colin Graeme Roe (English, 1858-1910) Title: Terrier Portrait Medium: OIl on canvas Size: 14 x 12 inches (35 x 30 cm) including the frame Colin Graeme Roe (1858–1910) was a British artist best known for his charming paintings of animals—particularly dogs and horses—set in the British countryside. Born in Sheffield, England, he came from an artistic family; his father, Robert Henry Roe, was also a painter. It’s clear that creativity ran in the blood, and Colin developed his own distinctive style early on. Roe made a name for himself by capturing the spirit of country life, a subject that was incredibly popular in Victorian Britain. His paintings often featured faithful hunting dogs like spaniels, terriers, and setters, either in action or relaxing in rustic surroundings. He had a knack for bringing out the personality of the animals he painted, which made his work especially appealing to dog lovers and sporting enthusiasts alike. Over the course of his career, Roe signed his work in two ways: “Colin Graeme Roe” and simply “Colin Graeme” as in the present work. It's said that a family disagreement led him to drop the Roe surname at times, though the quality of his work remained consistent under both names. Though not widely known outside of collectors’ circles, Roe’s paintings have fetched respectable prices at auction. One of his more notable sales was a pair of whippet portraits that sold for over £14,000 at Christie’s in London. His work remains in demand, particularly among those who appreciate traditional animal portraiture and sporting scenes. Despite some personal struggles—reports suggest he battled with alcohol later in life—Roe continued to produce art that resonated with people. His paintings offer a window into a bygone era of British country life, filled with loyal dogs, quiet landscapes, and a sense of nostalgia that still draws admirers today.
