About the Item
Sloughi: a champion dog "Djaeser Patchouli Etnen" - a red brindle
by Dorothy Alexandra Johnson (1902-1988)
signed lower right
oil painting on canvas, unstretched
5.5 x 7.5 inches, the card it is loosely affixed to measures 8.25 x 10.25 inches
Delightful painting by the highly regarded English dog artist Dorothy Alexandra Johnson. It depicts a champion Best of Breed "Djaeser Patchouli Etnen" - its champion name is inscribed lower left.
This is signed lower right and inscribed lower left. This work forms part of a collection we currently hold by Dorothy Johnson, and seems to mostly date from the 1930's - but this one is later - painted towards the end of Dorothy's life in the 1970's. We can date this one to the 1970's as this dog was named Best of Breed in the first Sloughi breed class in 1974 at the Hunting Dogs of Ancient Egypt Open Show in the UK.
The canvas is is different to her older works and this one is only loosely affixed at the top of the canvas to the backing card. It is small but beautifully executed. On unstretched canvas, it is too small to stretch, so the ideal way to display this would be affixed to a backing board - as here - and framed around the image to suit your taste.
Dorothy Alexandra Johnson was born in 1902 in Nottingham, England, and remained there her whole life. Attending the Nottingham School of Art and having studied under Arthur Spooner, a respected animal artist, it is no surprise that her work from the 1930's focused entirely on art relating to dogs, recording images of many significant canine breed champions.
