Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare.
Edwin Cooper (1785–1833) was an English painter renowned for his lively and characterful depictions of animals, particularly dogs. Born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, Cooper was the son of a professional miniaturist and engraver, and grew up surrounded by artistic influence. From a young age, he showed a keen eye for detail and a strong affinity for animals, which became the central theme of his work.
Cooper specialized in rural and sporting scenes, often featuring dogs, horses, and game animals in naturalistic settings. His dog portraits, in particular, were admired for their accuracy, vitality, and ability to capture the unique personalities of his subjects. Whether portraying a poised hunting hound or a scruffy terrier at rest, Cooper brought warmth and realism to each canvas.
He was a founding member of the Norwich Society of Artists, a regional group that helped elevate the profile of provincial painters during the early 19th century. Though he died relatively young, at just 48, Cooper left behind a strong body of work that contributed to the growing popularity of animal painting in Britain.
His paintings remain appreciated today for their charm, craftsmanship, and insight into the close relationship between humans and animals in Georgian and Regency England.
