About the Item

Elizabeth Bell’s Dappled Elegance is a masterfully rendered oil painting celebrating the grace and stature of an Arabian or American Saddlebred horse in motion. The artist captures the dynamic poise and refined musculature of the dapple-gray steed against a softly painted pastoral landscape. Bell’s sensitivity to detail and realism, combined with a romanticized composition, evokes the timeless tradition of equestrian portraiture. The horse's elegant prancing stance, proud head carriage, and expressive eye reflect not only its physical beauty but also its spirited nature. The work is set in a deep brown wood frame that complements the painting’s traditional aesthetic. An ideal addition to collections of equestrian art, Americana, or traditional realism, this piece resonates with collectors who value finely executed animal portraiture and historical genres. Biography: Elizabeth. Bell was born in Rochester, N.Y., and grew up riding the milkman's horse around the block. Her love of horses never waned, said her daughter, Barbara Hipsley. As a child, Mrs. Bell began drawing horses and continued to teach herself to draw and paint until 1940 when she began her professional career. Her husband, Edward, who was attached to an Army calvary unit, shared her interest in horses and encouraged her career. Her portraits of horses became nationally recognized and she began to accept commissions from horse owners around the country. Mrs. Bell collected all her own material on her subject. She would visit the site where the horse was kept, photograph it, compile notes on the horse, its surroundings and even the cats or dogs that hung around the racing stable or the breeder's pasture, then begin painting. She had no agent, preferring to represent herself. Most clients sought her out, her daughter said. "My mother didn't consider her work work," Hipsley said. "She genuinely loved horses and could transfer that into her paintings." The finished portrait was always delivered in person by Mrs. Bell. Some sold for more than $10,000. Most are in private collections. In 1962, a year after her husband died, Mrs. Bell moved to Orlando and four years later to Parkland. She continued to own, ride and show horses until 1970, when she moved to Coral Springs.
