About the Item

Francis Mabel Hollams (British, 1877–1963) Three Portraits of “Scrap,” a Wire-Haired Terrier Oil on wood panel, monogrammed lower left “FMH” Circa 1940–1950 A delightful and characterful triple study by Francis Mabel Hollams, depicting a small terrier affectionately named Scrap in three animated poses upon a rustic wooden bench. Each vignette captures a distinct aspect of the dog’s personality — curious, attentive, and proud — rendered with the artist’s lively brushwork and affection for her canine subjects. Hollams, one of Britain’s most celebrated animal portraitists of the early to mid-20th century, was renowned for her ability to convey the individuality and intelligence of her subjects. A frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon, she worked primarily in oil on wood, often leaving backgrounds minimally defined to allow the sitter’s character to dominate the composition. Her work was particularly sought after by owners of champion hunters, racehorses, and beloved household companions across England’s country estates. In this composition, Hollams arranges Scrap in a trio of life studies, painted directly from observation, each delicately modelled with strokes of white and ochre against a muted green background. The central seated figure is flanked by two standing views, the repeated form suggesting both affection and an artist’s disciplined study of posture and personality. The result is a composition that feels intimate yet spirited — a portrait not merely of appearance but of temperament and charm. Housed in a hand made swept gilt frame, this work exemplifies Hollams’s quintessential style: unpretentious, sensitive, and deeply British in sentiment. A fine example of her enduring appeal among collectors of canine portraiture and early 20th-century sporting art
