The Collection of Charlie Watts.
Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare.
Frank Paton was a British artist best known for his charming and often humorous animal paintings and etchings, which won him a loyal following during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Born in Stepney, London, in 1855, Paton showed artistic talent from an early age and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy when he was just 16.
Paton’s work combined keen observation with a gentle sense of humor. He was especially skilled at depicting dogs, horses, and farm animals in both realistic and anthropomorphic scenarios. Many of his etchings featured comical scenes of animals mimicking human behavior—parodying society with warmth rather than satire. These were particularly popular as Christmas cards, often framed by elaborate borders teeming with witty details.
While much of his fame came from his etchings and illustrations, Paton was also a capable painter. His oils and watercolors often portrayed rural and sporting life, infused with the same affectionate eye for animal character. His compositions balanced technical skill with storytelling, appealing to both art lovers and casual audiences alike.
Despite not achieving the lofty status of academic painters, Paton was a household name in his time, especially among collectors of prints. His work offered an accessible blend of artistic quality and entertainment.
Frank Paton died in 1909, leaving behind a body of work that continues to delight viewers with its blend of realism, humor, and heart. His legacy endures in the timeless appeal of animals rendered with both accuracy and affection.
