About the Item

The Fox and Three Terriers in a woodland landscape is by renowned animal and landscape artist George Armfield (1810-1893). Armfield is known for his paintings of Spaniels and Terriers in lush woodland and seaside landscapes. The painting is signed by Armfield in red, lower right, (see in attached photos). The fox is a brilliant red, appearing from behind a tree, framed by the tree and the curved branch above him. Each terrier is a different color, each facing their ‘prey’, tails up in great excitement. Typical in George Armfield, the landscape is lush with trees, leaves, flowers and grasses. The forest is presented in enchanting detail, each leaf, and lighted blade of grass. In this work pink flowers grow beside the tan dog and grasses separate the terriers from the fox above them. Light shines through the trees in the distance. Leaves are shades of green but also colors of early autumn complementing the shades of animal furs. The terriers rest their paws on a log, looking playful. The canvas is firmly in place with likely original keys and frame. Bearing an old label of an antique store in New York this has been exceedingly well cared for. No faults in the painting. The frame has scuffs, especially on the corners, with some re-gilding over rough spots. Still very presentable, or can be re-framed. The coloring is fresh and robust, beautifully presented for being approximately 150 years old!
