About the Item

Attributed to George Earl (English, 1824–1908) Portrait of a Dachshund Oil on canvas, circular format Circa 1870–1880 Signed left centre (as visible) ⸻ A finely observed Victorian portrait of a dachshund, attributed to George Earl, one of the most celebrated English animal painters of the 19th century. Shown in profile against a softly worked, muted green ground, the dog is rendered with notable sensitivity and character, the glossy coat and alert expression conveyed through confident, economical brushwork. The circular composition lends the painting an intimate, almost medallion-like quality, focusing attention entirely on the sitter’s head and expression. Earl’s characteristic understanding of canine anatomy and temperament is evident: the gentle turn of the head, the soft modelling of the muzzle, and the subtle highlights along the eye and brow combine to create a portrait that feels both dignified and affectionate. The work is housed in a richly carved and gilt Victorian frame with inset corner spandrels, entirely appropriate to the period and enhancing the painting’s decorative presence. Such portraits were highly sought after in late Victorian England, reflecting the era’s deep affection for pedigree dogs and the growing status of animal portraiture as a serious genre. George Earl exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and was renowned for his dog paintings, many of which depicted individual pets with the same care and gravity traditionally reserved for human sitters.
