About the Item

Gilbert Joseph Holiday (1879–1937) was born on January 29, 1879, in London, England. He was the son of Sir Frederick Holiday and the nephew of artist Henry Holiday, a painter and stained-glass designer. His mother was a watercolourist. Holiday attended Westminster School, and it may have been during his time there that he observed first-hand the horses and troops of the Royal Horse Artillery, which fuelled his early love of horses. Holiday studied at the Royal Academy of Art from 1897 to 1902, where he distinguished himself for his ability to capture expression and movement using various mediums such as charcoal, pencil, oils, pastels, and watercolour. He began producing commercial illustrations for magazines such as The Strand, The Tatler, and The Graphic at the start of the twentieth century, while still producing works on canvas with oil paint. In 1904, his painting The Brewer’s Dray was accepted for the Royal Academy's exhibition when he was only 25. During World War I, Holiday served as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery, later becoming a reconnaissance officer. He fought at the Battles of Arras, Passchendaele, and the Third Battle of Ypres. After the war, he concentrated on painting sporting scenes, especially those involving horses. He illustrated several books, including Horses and Soldiers, a collection of his works. In 1932, while hunting with the Woolwich Draghounds, Holiday suffered a severe fall that crushed his spine, leading to the use of a wheelchair. Despite this, he continued to paint until his death on January 8, 1937. "Hounds Receiving Treats from the Dog Keeper" The composition captures the intimate and tender moment between the animals and their caretaker, showcasing Holiday's ability to convey emotion and character through his art. Holiday's use of watercolour in this piece demonstrates his skill in capturing the textures and nuances of light and shadow. The hues, fluid and brave brushwork bring the scene to life, highlighting the hounds' expressions and the dog's keeper's attentive gestures. This painting reflects Holiday's deep understanding and appreciation of animals, a theme prevalent in much of his work. His ability to depict the bond between humans and animals with such sensitivity and realism contributes to the enduring appeal of his art. paper size: 28.5 x 26.5 cm
