About the Item

This superb British Post Impressionist almost Surrealist oil painting is by noted artist Glyn Morgan. Morgan was a noted Welsh artist, initially taught by Ceri Richards in Cardiff and later a Benton End student where he was greatly influenced by Cedric Morris who proved to be his main source of inspiration throughout his artistic career. Painted in 1990 it is a surreal colourful painting of owls flying in a landscape, beneath the moon and over hills and trees. Morgan painted a number of fantasy paintings of birds, flowers, sunflowers, mushrooms with suns and moons in landscapes and this is a really lovely one. The colours and bold, confident brushwork are superb. This is a fine example of Morgan's work and a fantastic Post Impressionist oil painting. Signed lower left Morgan 90. Provenance: Label verso. Glyn Morgan was a Welsh artist, born in Pontypridd, Glamorgan, in 1926. His artistic education began at Cardiff College of Art in 1942, where he studied under renowned Welsh artist Ceri Richards. It was during his time at Cardiff that Glyn was first introduced to the work of Cedric Morris, who proved to be his main source of inspiration throughout his artistic career. In 1944 Glyn studied at Benton End (formally known as the East Anglian School of Drawing and Painting), where his friendship with Cedric Morris began. Benton End afforded space for Morris, Lett-Haines and many of their students to live as well as work at the school which contributed to the communal atmosphere and encouraged its laissez-faire but inspiring approach to learning. Jon Lys Turner's biography of the illustrator Richard Chopping and his partner Dennis Wirth-Miller, both alumni of the East Anglian School, characterises it as 'a place for the free exchange of artistic ideas and techniques'. The students were given a 'nom de plume' by Lett Haines. The school was anti-hierarchical as well as anti-patriarchal, with little in the way of structure or rules, and provided a setting for sexual as well as artistic liberation. While Morris focused on the students' work, Lett-Haines oversaw the school's administration as well as cooking two meals a day and thanks to Morris' work in the vegetable garden and Lett-Haines' enthusiasm for cooking, the community at Benton End did not experience hardships on the scale of wartime London. Through the 1940s and 1950s Benton End became the centre of a diverse community of twentieth-century artists, writers, and horticulturalists. Friends and visitors included the artists John Nash and Francis Bacon (October 1909 - April 1992) and the writers Ronald Blythe ( November 1922 - January 2023) and Stephen Spender (February 1909–July 1995). Glyn and Morris painted each other many times, and Glyn organised a Benton End exhibition at Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery in 1985, as well as contributing to the 2002 book ‘Benton End Remembered’. Glyn went on to attend Camberwell School of Art from 1947-1948 and during his time there he also taught painting at schools in Suffolk, Somerset and even Greece. His travels in Greece inspired an interest in Greek mythology, and he produces a series of paintings inspired by Greek mythology which were shown at the Chappel Galleries in 1996. Classical music also inspired his work, and his roots in Welsh history are also present in his work. Interestingly, he was very open about how difficult he sometimes found painting – he said in 1994 at the time of his and Cedric Morris’ exhibition at the Chappel Galleries ‘My pictures were, and still are, a battlefield’ (Telegraph’s obituary). The Chappel Galleries in Colchester exhibited Glyn’s work from the mid 90s through to 2014. He held numerous other solo shows, including at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth in 2006.

This wonderful Post Impressionist exhibited horses portrait oil painting is by noted British artist Edgar Downs. Painted in 1912 it was exhibited the same year at the Royal Academy London. The painting is of two magnificent horses, one white one brown, waiting patiently while a man leans over to open the gate. Beyond is a canopy of trees. The impressionist brushwork and strong impasto create a light which is vibrant and colourful. This is an excellent example of Downs' work and one can see his infinity with the natural world. Housed in a complementary frame 44 inches by 38 inches and in good condition. Edgar Downs, ROI, (1876–1963) was a British painter, known for painting agricultural scenes. Downs was born on 12 October 1876 at Claughton, Birkenhead, the son of William Downs. He was educated at Birkenhead School and the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, and received a silver medal there. He exhibited paintings called Our Daily Bread and The Edge of the Bog at the Royal Academy in 1911, when his address was given as 12 Bedford Gardens, Kensington, London. His other addresses included Arun House at Clymping, West Sussex, and latterly Mudeford, Hampshire where he died. During World War I, he served as a war artist, including spells at Gallipoli in 1915 and Salonica in 1916. He was assigned to the 1st County of London Yeomanry in July 1918. One of his paintings made at this time hangs in the Headquarters of the Inns of Court & City Yeomanry. Two of his works, Gathering Kelp (1914) and Cattle Ploughing in an Open Landscape (c. 1914), are in the collection of Fordingbridge Town Council at Fordingbridge Town Hall. Abraham Begeyn, Dutch Golden Age painter and Prussian court painter painted this wonderful 17th century Old Master oil painting. Painted circa 1690 and signed lower right, the subject matter is sheep and a goat under a tree in the foreground, amongst beautiful flora and fauna. Through the trees one can see some classical ruins to the left and to the right some buildings with a shepherd and his flock in front of the buildings and mountains beyond. Above is a beautiful sky tinged with pink, suggestive of dawn. There is tremendous detail in the flora and fauna and also the sheep's woolly coat. Begeyn particularly favoured painting this sort of scene with the elements of landscape, ruins or buildings and animals and was a master at it and highly prized in the Netherlands. This is an excellent example of Begeyn's work and is good condition given its age as a 17th century Old Master oil painting. Signed lower right. Provenance: Collection of Mr P. Housed in a gilt swept frame, 31 inches by 28 inches framed and in good condition. Abraham Begeyn (c. 1637 Leiden - 11 June 1697 Berlin), was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Begeyn was born in Leiden. Though perhaps known mostly for his Italianate landscapes and cattle in the manner of Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem, Begyn was a highly skilled painter active in many genres, who travelled widely. According to the RKD, Begeyn's earliest known work is from 1653, though he was first accepted into the Guild of St. Luke in Leiden in 1655. He stopped paying dues in 1667, because he set off for a trip to Italy. He is registered in Rome and Naples from 1659–1660. In the rampjaar or disaster year, of 1672, he is registered in Amsterdam, and after that he lived in London, where he painted at Ham House, Surrey, together with Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633–1707) and Dirck van Bergen...

This lovely British Victorian landscape oil painting is attributed to noted artist Sam Bough. It was painted circa 1855 after Bough had moved to Hamilton Lanarkshire in Scotland to focus on painting landscapes along side fellow artist Alexander Frazer. The composition is several cattle watering in a stream under the boughs of an ancient tree. There is superb impasto, for example on the clouds and this is a charming 19th century oil painting. Housed in an ornate gilt Victorian frame, 36 inches by 23 inches framed and in good condition. Samuel Bough RSA (1822–1878) was an English-born landscape painter who spent much of his career working in Scotland. He was born the third of five children in Abbey Street, Carlisle in northern England, the son of James Bough (1794-1845), a shoemaker, and Lucy Walker, a cook. He was raised in relative poverty, but with a keen encouragement in the arts. He was self-taught but mixed with local artists such as Richard Harrington and George Sheffield, and was strongly influenced by the work of Turner. After an unsuccessful attempt to live as an artist in Carlisle he obtained a job and as a theatre scenery painter in Manchester in 1845, later also working in Glasgow in the same role. Encouraged by Daniel Macnee to take up landscape painting he moved to Hamilton from 1851-4 and worked there with Alexander Fraser. In 1854 he moved to Port Glasgow to work on his technique of painting ships and harbours. His paintings were noted for their sensitivity to atmosphere and light, were often of cloudy shorelines and busy harbours. He also began supplementing his income by illustrating books, before moving to Edinburgh in 1855. On coming to Edinburgh he lived in a terraced house at 5 Malta Terrace in the Stockbridge area of the city. Following Turner's example, he became a skilful painter of seaports. In 1903, he became an Officer of Public Instruction. In 1912, he exhibited at the Salon Le soir at Mont Sabot and in 1914 L'Éang aux bruyères. His favorite subjects are pastures and heather, backyards, shaded rivers, pink and misty panoramas. They are treated in clean tones and a palette dominated by greens and browns.
