About the Item

Oil on canvas Image size: 25 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches (40 x 50 cm) 19th century gilt pierced frame This is a wonderful scene featuring a dark bay racehorses mounted by its jockey. The pair is depicted with the horse's owner, companion pony and stable boy. The quality of this work is very fine and the dealing of the animal is commendable; the finely worked horse's body having been achieved through close examination of the animal's anatomy. Victorian equine works such as this were often commissioned by members of the gentry to celebrate a victory by their racehorse, such as their horses winning a notable race.
