About the Item
Sold as a pair/Final price is for two paintings of 'Hunting scenes" by Henry Barraud (1811–1874), a British painter best known for his portraits, genre scenes, and animal paintings, particularly involving horses and dogs. Born in London into a family of French Huguenot descent, Barraud was part of a talented artistic family — his brother, William Barraud, was also a notable animal painter. The two often collaborated, with William typically painting the animals and Henry focusing on the figures and backgrounds.
Henry exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and other prestigious institutions throughout the mid-19th century. His work was popular among the Victorian upper class, and he often received commissions for equestrian portraits and domestic scenes involving pets and family life, reflecting the era’s fascination with sentimental and moralistic themes.
After William’s death in 1850, Henry continued to paint independently and produced a variety of well-received works. He died in 1874, leaving behind a legacy of detailed, emotive, and technically accomplished paintings that provide a window into Victorian society and its relationship with animals.
Some of his other notable works include:
"We praise Thee, O God" (1860)
– A large religious and ceremonial painting depicting a choir of children and clergy, which received wide acclaim and was later engraved.
"The London Season"
– A lively genre scene capturing the bustle and fashion of high society in Victorian London.
"The Lobby of the House of Commons" (1872)
– A historical group portrait featuring many prominent political figures of the day, showing Barraud's skill in both likeness and composition.
"The Morning Ride"
– An elegant equestrian portrait, showcasing his talent in depicting horses and high society leisure scenes.
Many of his works and those of this brother William were also turned into popular engravings, which helped spread their fame throughout Victorian England.
