About the Item

Henry and Charles' painting features a pastoral scene rendered with great attention to detail and a romanticized view of rural life. The setting is a quiet, sun-dappled country lane, bordered by lush green hedgerows and overhanging trees. The light filters through the leaves, casting soft shadows across the dusty roadside path. In the foreground, a family group rests beside the road: a mother seated on a grassy stone bank, cradling a small child in her lap, while an older boy plays with a dog nearby and his sister and father set camp for the night. Beside them, a brown donkey is resting under a tree while a chestnut horse, more finely groomed, stands quietly eating from the grass. In the background, the path curves gently into the distance, inviting the eye to wander. Far-off hills anchor the scene in a rural English countryside. The mood is peaceful and nostalgic, capturing a moment of ordinary life with quiet dignity. The color palette is completed with warm earth tones, gentle greens, and soft blues dominate, creating harmony between the figures and nature. While the setting is realistic, there is an idealized charm that reflects 19th-century sentimentality about rural life. Charles Thring 1825-1894 and Henry Waller Shayer 1826-1914 were sons of accomplished figure and landscape painter William Joseph Shayer (1787-1879). Taught and influenced by their father both sons also assisted him in his studio until his death. They lived with their father until his death in 1879 they where greatly influenced by his painting. They painted landscapes and sporting scenes, working jointly and also in collaboration with their father, he would paint the landscapes and the sons would paint the animals Today their works can be seen at the Cooper Gallery and the Southampton City Art Gallery.
