The Collection of Charlie Watts.
Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare.
The Hon. Henry Richard Graves (1818–1882) was a British portrait painter and the son of the 2nd Baron Graves. Active during the mid-19th century, Graves was known for his refined and intimate portraits, often capturing members of the British aristocracy and upper classes in elegant, composed settings.
Graves exhibited at the Royal Academy and gained respect for his ability to portray his subjects with grace and subtlety. One of his best-known works was a portrait of Lady Dorothy Nevill, painted in 1855 and shown at the Academy the following year. Lady Nevill herself described it as “the best thing he ever did... quite a little gem,” reflecting both the technical quality of the painting and the rapport Graves established with his sitters.
His talents extended beyond oil painting; he also worked in pencil, and his 1848 drawing The Morning Walk reveals his skill in capturing character and atmosphere with minimal means. Graves's sitters included a variety of prominent individuals from Victorian society, such as Alice Charlotte Arobin and Henry Fortescue, whose portraits convey both dignity and personality.
Graves was not only an artist but also a subject of portraits himself. He was photographed by Camille Silvy in 1861—an indication of his place within the artistic and social circles of the time.
Though not a household name today, Henry Richard Graves left behind a body of work that reflects the values and aesthetics of Victorian Britain. His portraits offer a quiet yet eloquent record of a bygone era, where art served as both personal tribute and social document.
