About the Item

For the month of December we are offering very special pricing of at least a 20% discount on all of the paintings at the gallery. This Hunt Slonem painting is on sale this week for 35% off of the original listed price. A great opportunity to purchase a large Hunt Slonem bird painting before the Holidays even though, depending on where you are located it might arrive after the Holiday. I just spoke with Hunt Slonem's studio regarding this special painting and the meaning behind it. Hunt said the painting symbolizes spiritual presence, which is an important element in all of Hunt's paintings. The birds symbolize spirit and vitality. He referred to the bird in the top left corner as a “mystic jay.” Hunt used the words “spiritual juxtaposition” to describe this work. The painting features one Steller Jay bird (The bird on the top left, which is the Mystic Jay that Hunt referred to in his description), 3 Magpie birds and 3 Toucan birds. We have included in this listing a photo of a real Steller's Jay, the bird Hunt spoke about on the left of this painting as the Mystic Jay. You can see the interesting look of the feathers on the top of the birds head. The face area of the real bird is dark and the lower body of the real bird is lighter in color, just how Hunt portrayed it in his painting. This large painting measures 36x46" framed, the canvas size is 30x40". Hunt said that the red areas in the 4 corners of the painting act as a strong visual contrast between the white background. The painting is signed by Hunt Slonem and dated 1992 on the back of the canvas. A Certificate of Authenticity from Hunt Slonem's studio in New York is included. We have included close up images in this listing of the surface so that you can see the paint textures on the surface of the canvas. Hunt's richly colored bird paintings are celebrated worldwide. His work is in the collections of more that 100 museums including, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum just to mention a few. There is a massive coffee table book on Slonem's bird paintings titled "Birds Hunt Slonem" The style of his paintings are immediately recognizable. His thickly painted oil on canvas art with his heavy textures and strokes of movement are what makes his work instantly known by collectors world wide. Hunt has said that his choice of companions since childhood has been the company of birds and his inspiration comes from them. He lives with 60 birds in his massive New York City studio and they are always with him when he paints.

Museum Collected artist Abstract Illusion acrylic painting on board 37x27"
By James Havard
Located in Southampton, NY
James Havard is considered one of the "pioneers of the abstract illusionism movement" One of James Havard's homes and studio's was on the island of Tortola and this work from 1979 evokes the feel of the aqua blue waters and the reference of Salt Island in the painting refers to the island of Tortola and the feel of the ocean waters. In the 1970's Havard was the principle artist that started working in an abstract style that included gestural brush strokes and paint squeezed directly from the tube to create beautiful surface textures in his paintings. He then painted shadows to certain areas of paint to create the 3d illusion of depth to his paintings. This created the "Abstract Illusion" movement of the 1970's. Havard had many museum exhibitions and his paintings were sort after and exhibited at galleries around the world. Havard along with other artists like, Michael Gallagher, George Green...
