Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare.
James Lynwood Palmer (1868–1941) was a British artist celebrated for his elegant and lifelike portraits of racehorses, capturing the spirit and stature of some of the finest thoroughbreds of his time. Born in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, Palmer had a lifelong passion for horses, which guided both his artistic focus and his early career working with animals.
Palmer spent time in Canada and the United States as a young man, where he honed his skills as a horseman and began sketching horses more seriously. Upon returning to England, he gradually established himself as a specialist in equine portraiture, earning commissions from leading racehorse owners, breeders, and aristocrats.
What set Palmer apart was his ability to portray not just the physical precision of a horse, but its personality, vitality, and breeding. His portraits were often painted in natural light with minimal background, emphasizing the nobility of the animal itself. He became a sought-after figure in racing circles, with works depicting champions such as Pretty Polly and Persimmon.
Though not a household name today, Palmer’s work was widely admired during his lifetime, and he played a key role in elevating the genre of sporting art. His paintings remain prized by collectors and continue to resonate with lovers of both horses and traditional British equestrian art.
