Provenance The Collection of Charlie Watts.
Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare.
James Ward RA (1769–1859) was one of the leading British animal painters of the 19th century, celebrated particularly for his dynamic and powerful depictions of horses. Born in London in 1769, he began his artistic career as an engraver, apprenticed to his brother William Ward, a mezzotint engraver. This foundation in printmaking honed his keen eye for detail and form, which would later characterize his paintings.
Ward transitioned to oil painting in the 1790s, initially influenced by the neoclassical style and the work of George Stubbs, the preeminent horse painter of the 18th century. However, Ward brought a more Romantic sensibility to his subjects, portraying animals not only with anatomical accuracy but with a heightened sense of movement, character, and emotional power.
His horse paintings, in particular, are notable for their grandeur and expressiveness. He depicted horses in various contexts—from pastoral scenes and military engagements to dramatic studies of individual animals. Works such as “Mares and Foals in a Landscape” and “Portrait of a Grey Hunter with a Groom” exemplify his ability to blend naturalistic detail with compositional drama.
One of his most ambitious works, “Gordale Scar” (1814–1815), while primarily a landscape, includes horses and cattle and reflects Ward's monumental style and fascination with the sublime. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1811, a testament to his standing among British artists of the time.
Ward's equine subjects often transcended mere portraiture; they explored the strength, spirit, and beauty of the horse, capturing its integral role in British life—whether in agriculture, sport, or warfare. His legacy endures in the continued admiration for his animal studies, which bridge the gap between scientific observation and artistic expression.
