This elegant dog portrait of an alert and characterful Jack Russell is by John Emms (1843-1912), one of the most accomplished British animal painters of the late Victorian era and a firm favourite among collectors of traditional country house and sporting themed art. Emms was particularly admired for his ability to capture dogs with an uncommon sense of individuality, warmth, and quiet intelligence—qualities that made his work highly sought after by sporting families and landed estates in the 19th century.
Born in Norfolk (England) and trained under the renowned animal painter Frederick William Keyl, Emms developed a refined, naturalistic style grounded in close observation and excellent draughtsmanship. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy in London and enjoyed considerable success among patrons who valued authenticity, understatement, and craftsmanship over theatrical display. His paintings were intended to live comfortably within country houses—hung in libraries, gun rooms, studies, and hallways—where they formed part of a wider visual language of rural life, sport, and tradition.
In this work, Emms presents the terrier with calm dignity and restraint. The softly modelled coat, expressive eyes, and muted tonal background create an intimate, timeless portrait that feels both decorative and deeply personal. There is no overt narrative, only character—an approach that allows the painting to sit effortlessly within both historic and contemporary interiors inspired by classic English country house style.
Still highly regarded today, Emms’s works are represented in major public collections, including the Tate, and remain especially desirable for collectors seeking authentic British sporting and animal paintings with genuine interior presence. Presented in its original gilt frame, this painting is an ideal piece for country houses, traditional libraries, paneled rooms, or refined American homes influenced by English design and heritage.

John Emms
John Emms first exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1866. Known for his equestrian and canine portraits, his most interesting works were the dogs, with a particular fondness for foxhounds and terriers. Using bold, loose brushwork and ample paint, Emms created portraits that were sentimental and that expressed vitality.
